Holiday half life

I need a holiday, all this endless work and stress, so I'm going to try and prise myself from my desk for a week and take the family away somewhere. That I expect would be a good week but when it's over how long will I remain recharged? Usually a holiday seems like a distant memory after about 1.5 days back at work. There's a bit of me that thinks its just an expensive, frivolous thing to do. What's your experience? Do holidays have any long-term benefit?

A holiday is good to just give you brain a rest, th body a relief from stress and keeps you from going postal.

Just have a week off, and stay at home. Cheap and easy.

I agree with you there. I've been to San Diego, Oceanside and many of the beaches in CA many years ago and they weren't that bad but I wouldn't go now, I hate big crowds.

Depends on what you make of the holiday. Get some good memories in and they'll last you through 20-30 years. Looking back with regret on how many I didn't do....

(Enlarging Upon DD's Carri bean recommendation) I suggest a good all-inclusive. The ones that absolutely forbid tipping. You've not had a real vacation until you've had one without any money in your pockets (assuming you're wearing clothing at all). I just came back about a week-and-a-half ago and haven't lost it yet. The secret, as stated in my post at the time [Click Here, Mon]: Plan not to do anything whilst your there, and then, don't even do that. Irie I !

I did look at that. But I have two reservations, firstly that you just end up eating at the same place the whole time rather than exploring the local restaurants/tavernas etc. Secondly complimentary booze from 10am until midnight. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. There are two occasions I've experienced cheap or free booze. Once when a local nightclub decided to do a promotion and sell a pint at 10p, that descended into chaos and fighting. Another occasion they gave you two free pints of London Pride on St. Georges day - the same, and this was in the Square Mile of London. I can see the Brits maximizing the use of complimentary alcohol, and with my 4 year old son and 2 year old daughter in tow I'm not sure I want to risk it.

Holidays or vacations here in America, do have long term benefits. They keep the wife happy and she will remember them fondly for a long time, mine is STILL gushing about the one she and I took to Jamaica last July. Also they build memories in and about the family as a whole. Your children will grow up and move out but you and they will always have memories of vacationing together. Hopefully good memories, but even disaster trips create memories of how you all survived, persevered, and made the best of it. We went camping last Sept and had just eaten dinner when the rains came so we all huddled in the tent in the pouring rain, the tent starting to leak around the edges, and sang along with bad music from my son's phone. Enjoy the time with your family. Yes the routine will still be there when you get back but the time away is well spent. Unless you are the one person who says on their deathbed, "I should have spent more time in the office."
