Got an email from what appears to be eBay saying I need to change my password because their database was hacked. The email looks professional, but it also feels like a phishing expedition. Anyone know if this is legit?

Yup. They were hacked a couple of weeks back (and are finally getting around to notifying people).

My guess is either 0. Your email is a phisher 1. You actually do have an account at ebay. :)

There are many phishing emails from "Ebay" doing the rounds. I think you will find Ebay has not sent out a global email at all but implores users to change passwords on their home page. Treat it as rubbish. Ebay has also said that there is little useful information for hackers in your Ebay account but if you are using the same password for other services the hackers now have your password. It is a great deal more important to change these other passwords.

What relationship does this have to the email in question? I would say the email is definitely not legit just because of this.

Log into eBay as you normally do and change your password. That way you will be sure you are not being directed to a hacker eBay look alike site from an email link.

As mentioned above - yes they got hacked and yes you should change your password. Whether the email is a phish is anyone's guess - emails to me from eBay are generally directed straight to the bin without opening, so I wouldn't have noticed a legitimate one.

The clue that an email is a phishing email is that the email will contain a link of some sort to a website. Genuine warning emails, nowadays, do not contain URLS or telephone/address information. They rely on you knowing where to log in to change your details. The ebay email I got contained no URLs so I knew it was genuine - as well as following the news I knew that I was due for an email from ebay. So my general rule is - if the email contains a URL or contact information from the sender - it is in all probability a phishing email.
