Someone must just post it to the Chrome Web Store. It is a safety feature so that Chrome cannot suffer from the 'IE screen of tool-bars' If nobody wants to do it, I'll post it.
You can overcome it by downloading the installer to your computer and install it from there. Beside Chrome Web Store, your computer is considered as safe place...

Doesn't work with user scripts :mad: There is no way to install them directly anymore. Best thing about that: The "response" from Google to that issue:

-If it is an extension you wrote yourself, you can upload it to the webstore and publish it in a "hidden" state so that only people with the link, or people in a set of trusted tester users, can install it.
There's no way I'll spend 5$ just because they think I my userscripts may not be safe for me :mad:

Well. I could install the user script again by dragging it to the extension page. but after a restart of Google Chrome it got disabled again. I now resorted to using Google Chrome Canary now as I have no intention of either converting every user script in a full fledged extension (and paying 5$ only to be able to host my own user scripts there) and I don't really want to change my browser or OS... Seems to work fine so far (although Chrom Canary has an issue with Gmail with certain languages but you can circumvent that by switching the language of Gmail to English)

Yes, you right! I didn't do the restart part...I think I will open a bug report with Google...There must be a way to tell Chrome to allow an extension, or maybe Google wants to be Microsoft?

They DID have that option to "opt-in" for extension from unknown sources. The problem was: Obviously malicious software just changed the setting to make it look like the user set the opt-in flag and thus rendering that option pretty much worthless as a safety feature. That's why they now just thought "Well, we got a few big sunshines as users that aren't able to protect themselves. How about pissing off every user that actually uses that feature by disabling those addins whitout possiblity to reenable them, forcing them figure out how to write a chrome extension (!!) AND grabbing 5$ (!!) from everyone that wishes to do so" THAT will show those evil phishers, spammers, evil software writes, etc... there's no way how they could possibly hijack the browser!!" :rolleyes: Putting sarcasm aside: I don't think that this was a wise decision as they only made a step towards a more closed software. Sure: Everyone's free to switch to chromium (or canary as I did) but still this is a bit of a PITA.

If it's just a script, and not a full extension, would TamperMonkey[^] help?

It might. But what I always liked was the ability to directly install userscripts by just dragging them onto the extension page (or into the browser window in the earlier days ;)) without the need of an extension. As I said I switch to the Canary Preview channel to see how it works out.
