crops

I'm sure this is the wrong crowd to ask, but you never know. Behind the mansion where I rest my being after working hours there are fields. This year there is corn and some sort of wheat I think. It doesn't really matter which type of crop there is grown as long as it has a long stem the same feature arises. The plants in the middle of the field grow larger than those on the side of the field. In fact all stems are large except for those within, let's say, 1 meter of the edges where it gradually grows until a maximum. sample[^] So the question is: why? :)

Fertiliser is expensive so overspray onto the path is avoided?

seeding? the seeds sown on the edges are the single pass whilst those more in the middle get an overlap also the crop at the edge are less protected from the elements than those further in my guess anyway
You cant outrun the world, but there is no harm in getting a head start Real stupidity beats artificial intelligence every time.
Crops on the edge tend to be better protected as hedges are better wind breaks than the crops themselves, assuming there are hedges, the hedges also provide a habitat for creatures that prey on the main crop pests.
One day I aspire to having a signature.

It's like anything in nature, survival of the fittest. The strongest plants and therefore the biggest move into the centre and make the weakest ones move to the edge. I've seen this happen many a time with my 'crops'.
That's how crop circles happen - a stampede...

not according to that pic, there is a definite unplanted gap leaving the crop exposed

(MQOTD rules and previous solutions)It appears to be a buffer strip as others have said to act as wind breaks, also to reduce water erosion among other reasons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffer_strip[^]
It was broke, so I fixed it.

(MQOTD rules and previous solutions)The crops in the middle of the field feel the love and warmth of the crops around them making them grow better. The crops on the sides don't get that much love and warmth and it makes them a little sad. I think I should've become a farmer instead of a programmer. My crop-knowledge is unmatched! :D

(MQOTD rules and previous solutions)As an aside, the crop in the picture looks like wheat, the other one you have is probably barley. Corn is actually a generic term meaning the most commonly grown grain in the area, unless of course you are referring to sweatcorn.

(MQOTD rules and previous solutions)Competition for resources, specifically sunlight. Around the edge there is less shade so they don't need to grow so much to compete, those further in have to try to get as high as they can to compete with those around them, although there is a natural maximum they all cannot outgrow. Also those crops around the edge are likely to get less water as it runs off, faces competition from borders (hedges / trees),evaporation, whereas in the middle conditions are uniform. How all plants grow is defined by their competition for the resources they need.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

(MQOTD rules and previous solutions)Around here, crops are fertilized via aircraft, and because of field boundaries, roads and power lines, the crop duster can't open the sprayer fully until the plane is inside the field bounds. The outer edges don't get fed as well as the rest of the field, so growth tends to look a bit stunted around the perimeter compared to the middle.

(MQOTD rules and previous solutions)In addition to the fertilizer answers, humidity is higher in the middle. Farmers know and plan on this, especially in the drier climates of the mountain and desert west.
