Anyone use LinkedIn? It's somewhat unavoidable in today's digital age, but how effective do you find it to be? Does it really keep you connected with your work colleagues? Does it help you find jobs? ...or is it another mind numbing social page? What do you guys think? :java:

Dunno, I try to keep my profile as ineffective as possible, beside name and connections it is empty. I still got few business-ish offers and requests from random recruiters. Just be sure to turn off all notification, because they are mostly useless spam.

It is a tool; and can be a very useful tool if you are into Business networking[^] where you need, for your business, to be connected to a lot of people, giving an receiving business opportunities from those people. IMO, For code monkeys like us (most of us) it is not really useful until you are searching for a new job. try it, use it; and if it does not work do not use it and just keep your professional data up to date.

      I'd rather be phishing!

I created an account maybe 4 years ago when looking for work. Haven't logged into it since. But at least I still get spam from them any time a contact does something.

I think that's how most people seem to use LinkedIn... "looking for a job, time to update my account!" ;P

Yes, and utterly ineffective. But I don't use it other than to keep my work profile more-or-less current (+/- a year or so) Otherwise, yeah, it's mind numbing, but not as much as Farcebook. Marc

Worked for me ... set a profile up when I was ***** off at work, kept it (sort of) up to date then out of the blue got a message from my network... and did end up with a contract as a result. Have had all of the silly adverts, all of the annoying agencies randomly trying to connect, but have also managed to put others in touch with contacts that have led to them getting jobs. (Insert happy face here) But it was never intended to be a "social" network - I tend to "slap" back on the "likes" and random "endorsements" ... I've been endorsed by my garden designer for SDLC ffs!! As some of the other posts intimate ... it's a tool to be used if you want to use it. It can be effective. It can also be an irritating annoyance. You can also make a right old mess of it. Most of the (UK) advisory companies mentoring groups through redundancy situations rate it quite highly though (that T-shirt has been worn)

You can use it as Facebook: - post what you do and see what your mates do. You can use it to read about points that interest you: - following companies and people that are close to your job or needs. You can use it to find jobs: - there are tools to make this. In my case, I have some contacts and I've participated in some forums that are interesting to me, but I've got nothing positive from it, only time waste by now... I guess that if some day I run out of job, I could try to use it to find a new place sooner. But who knows...

I don't know anyone in LinkedIn (or Google+, for that matter), but my network keeps a-growin'.

No, it's not. I deleted my account a few months ago. And no, never got anything usefull from there but a lot of spam.

Well, the fact that you even made an account in the first place sort of means you didn't manage to avoid it altogether.
