25 Incredibly Useful Inventions You Didn’t Even Know You Needed.[^] I think I would like most of the items in the list. Some cool things and great ideas.
There are only 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't.
I like the Nightlight with Portable Glowing Orbs, seems like it might be useful for an old codger like me at night.
As I grow older I've found that pleasing everyone is impossible but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Not hourglasses, but in Hungariaorszag they've had countdowns on traffic lights for quite some time. The first ones I can think of where in Veszprém and have been their maybe 6 or 7 years.

isn't there the danger that drivers race to squeeze through before they change red, though?

How exactly would that be different than from today?
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason? Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful? --Zachris Topelius Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. You like that? You go right on staring at it. I prefer looking at galaxies. -- Sarah Hoyt

I think it's the difference between 'you have an unknown amount of time' and 'you have this amount of time' to get through the light. when the amount is unknown (and variable) I would think it more likely that drivers would err on the side of caution and slow down. perhaps 'm wrong, but I feel that given a countdown to Red, people may think they have time and 'go for it' (By 'people' I mean all the otehr drivers, obviously, not me - I am the perfect driver!)

Agreed. Around Chicago (and probably many cities) they have countdown timers on some of the pedestrian walk / don't walk signals. Invariably approaching pedestrians start to trot (or run) when it gets close and end up causing more problems than not.

Well in India, now a days there are count down timers for Red. People switch off their motor-bikes, scooters, cars on Red and can start just in time before it is green again. Saves fuel (probably) ;P , reduces pollution. So I like it.

So, these engines use less during starting then during running on a low speed? Only reduces pollution if it saves fuel, which again, was unsure. I'd recommend leaving the vehicle running, without turning up the gas.

I saw once in China timer traffic lights... they are really useful and work really well in ultra-crowded places as people are ready to press the pedal as soon as the light goes green!

Excellent for use in a sietch.
