If I'm applying for a Techie job, do I really need to be on twitter (?), stick my Farcebook page on my CV and generally be visible ? I was under the impression employers wouldn't be impressed by some of this, is it to make the Arts graduates/Business studies refugees feel like they are on the hot edge of technology? :~

Depends what's on your wall...you might want to "sanitize" it for a few months in case potential employers do go looking for it...

I understand that it has become quite normal that they do so. However, it's hard to keep it clean because it's so easy to go all the way back to the beginning of (FB) time... :sigh: Personally, I don't care, and I don't list it on my CV either. As far as I'm concerned, that is a part of the private sphere and has nothing to do on the CV. If they want to try to find it themselves, go ahead, be my guest. I've got nothing almost nothing to hide... ;)

LinkedIn yes, Twitter probably (if your tweets are IT related), Farcebook no. Also - put your CodeProject articles on your CV - good differentiator.

My tuppence worth is that Facebook and twitter are not required for a techie and in fact a lot of tech firms don't like their staff on these (too much chance of staff saying something bad about the company or letting slip something the company didn't want public) - most do like LinkedIn however but I doubt there is much of a stain two the other nowadays (unless you have stuff that you wouldn't like them to know - bit like griffs 100 hot sheep page)

I got some visits based on my LinkedIn profile...So it can help if you have some nice things out-there...

Well I am on LinkedIn not that it gets much use. I have to agree with your comments regarding Farcebook & Twatter.

Well, if they want to they can find me on LinkedIn, Farcebook (but I wouldn't want them too!) & Codeproject, my latest version of CV has a link to an article I wrote (& good feeback!). So I'm not totally invisible, just not very exposed. (I have managed to avoid uploading pictures of each meal, including photos of myself p***ed out my brain etc.)...

In the US (and perhaps other countries), companies have been asking prospective employees for their social media profiles as part of a standard background check. Some companies are curious if you have a technical blog or contribute to open source projects, as this weighs in your favor. /ravi

As I grow older I've found that pleasing everyone is impossible but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.
