Hi All, Does anybody use the Monster web site, in the UK there TV adverts have been replaced by Reed (so annoying...) I just applied for a role that linked through to the Monster site. A lot easier to use than I remember... :wtf:

The problem with Monster and their ilk is numerous: 1. it is trolled by Indian "placement" agencies, probably off-shore. 95% of the calls I get are from nearly impossible to understand Indian speakers with names like "Jack." As rude, racist, arrogant and type casting as it may sound (and actually is), I literally have taken to hanging up the instant I hear an Indian accent. 2. nobody actually pays attention to flags like "will NOT relocate." 3. nobody seems to look at anything except the last 6 months of experience. I have 2 years of Ruby on Rails and 10 years of C#. What do I get calls for? RoR. 4. If not trolled by #1, the remainder are American head hunters. I have, not once, received a call from an actual company looking to hire. 5. When I apply for a job, I invariably discover I just "applied" via a head hunter agency, not the direct company. I don't think companies directly advertise on Monster anymore. 6. I have never actually gotten a job through Monster (and no, it's not because I hang up on them.) Waste of time, in my opinion. It's who you know that can recommend you that has always been the way I've gotten a job. The only exceptions are cold calls/emails because someone wanted to hire me as a result of a Code Project article I've written. Marc

Not really but a monster recruited me some 17 years ago... :( (Now I'm looking a way to get out...)

I've gotten leads from Monster, but as Marc said, it's mostly Indian trolls who don't read my resume (where does it say ASP.NET? Nowhere, so why are you contacting me?) However, I'm now interviewing with a company due to an in-house recruiter finding my resume on Monster.

I actually got one job from monster. It lasted almost 10 years. Nothing since then though. I use Dice but have similar experience as the others. Mostly barely English speakers wanting to know if I would move 3000 miles to the middle of nowhere for a temp job that will only last 3 months. And, when I tell them "no", they always come back with, "but you would be a perfect fit!". Not too often but more often than Monster, I get a call for an actual real job from an actual corporate person. They usually have equally unrealistic expectations though.

If you do search on monster or dice, find a somewhat unique phrase in the job posting. Then search the Internet and you can usually find the job posting from the original company and bypass the headhunters completely.

Mostly I've been using either efinancialcareers.co.uk or jobserve.co.uk recently, depending on the season I tend to get A LOT of calls and emails from agencies. I've taken to having a specific phone number with a recorded message stating my requirements and asking them to leave me a message if it fits. Those that do, get a call back. On the email side, I direct all job related spam into one email folder where I have a custom extension that bounces a reply with the same message as above and a copy of my cv to any email address listed in the mail. I'm starting to think however, that directly calling companies and making more use of LinkedIn might be a better way to go.
