And not for the reasons you might think, no it's much worse: http://imgur.com/OaEFniI[^] I've been using Windows 8 since the first developer preview waay back, and have defended it against the naysayers, and then it goes and does this on me. After a while, my desktop/downloads/recent places links become rendered useless! This has happened multiple times on multiple machines, and no I don't use a Microsoft account, always sign into the machine locally so it's not like it happened once and then synced to the other machines. Anybody any idea why this happens? Had this on both 8.0 and 8.1 on different occasions,

Maybe it happens because it is a Microsoft product! :-)

Sounds like malware. You should be able to restore the association by either editing the registry[^] or downloading and importing a .reg file[^].

Well that looks fun. A quick search shows people having this issue on Windows 7 as well, though, and it has something to do with file associations; restoring the defaults seems to fix it. (Now can one restore the defaults without wiping out any associations you've added while installing applications? Hope so.)

Did you install a program just before that happened ? Or possibly open the link with a different program than normal? The error says the file type association is not there anymore. Most likely something tried to take over that file type and then messed up so then nothing was associated with it. Or it got corrupted when power went out or Went to sleep. With out recording "what" changed it, it would be hard to pin down. I have seen several odd quirks to Win 8, including the need to do a factory reset to get it going again.

Yesterday I installed 8.1 in a VM, it was literally the first time I've ever used 8/8.1. Half way through the install it says something went wrong with the group policy but carries on anyway. The desktop part of it literally does not work, all the icons glitch out and can't be clicked.
