A local group is going to have a car show this weekend, and among the categories of cars are a few that are female-specific (i.e., "Best Female Car"). When I saw that, I thought, "oh good - they're trying toget more women nvolved in the hobby". And then I thought, "But are they implying that they think women can't compete at the same level as men in a car show?" I would bet that the vast majority of car show participants nowadays don't do any of the work on their own cars, so IMHO, the owner of the car - or the owner's gender - shouldn't matter. Maybe I'm just over-thinkin' it...

Would the "best female car" be like a white convertible with pink fluffy seats, something known as a hairdressers car here. Makes sense to me to have this comp. seperate to the main event.

Yeah I agree I don't see a special category for women.

Have you ever just looked at someone and knew the wheel was turning but the hamster was dead? Trying to understand the behavior of some people is like trying to smell the color 9.

Car with the top off, perhaps? :D Edit: Car that's easiest to mount. Car that purrs quietly. Car that leaks the least. Ok, I should stop now. :)

Unless you don't care whether you sleep next to a man or a woman, you're sexist? Sorry, but there's a difference between the sexes. The difference does imply sexist changes. We will not compete in breast-feeding competitions. Anyone who wants to make them completely equal will have to start at the chromosome-level.

After reading the first line I thought you were talking about cars which were more likely to be owned by a woman or a car characterized as a 'female car', for instance the new VW Beetles. Male and own one? Turn in your man card! But I agree with you that the majority of the car show participants don't work on their own cars. Anecdotally, a buddy of mine's dad owns an old vette and competes. He drives his for fun during the summer but lets a pro do the work to keep it in shape and running top notch. Undercarriage is clean, no dings or damage, but it is black and looks like a car that gets used. Every single time, he loses to a guy who has the same model and year but the only time the car ever moves is to go in or out of the trailer. It doesn't even get started to do that! That right there is a shame. If you own a beautiful piece of engineering, drive and enjoy it otherwise it is just collecting dust. One of the wing places nearby here has a get together every other week for car people to come out and show off their rides. There is a nice little red ferrari that shows up from time to time, third owner. When he bought it, less than 20k miles. Now it has over 200k. He has taken it camping to the middle of nowhere, driven it across the country with his son... you know, enjoyed the hell out of it. Proper car love right there.

This has nothing to do with sexual preference. It has to do with implied inequality with regards to a topic (car ownership) where gender really doesn't - and shouldn't, IMHO - matter. I happen to agree that women and men will never be the same as far as physical and physiological differences are concerned. Men can't have babies (they don't have the hips for it :) ). However, i do think women and men should be treated as equals in every way otherwise possible.

Trying to get more women involved in an area generally dominated by men... I don't have an issue with that. A friend has a 67 Mustang convertible that he maintains; yes, he does the work on his car. And, he is involved in a local car club. For the most part, car shows for him are a social atmosphere; the plaques he can earn are fun, but not what is important. So, if you enjoy seeing women with their cars... good!
