They should have been replaced with better quality engineered fixed seats years ago. IMO, it is just a question of economies of scale. The less parts a seat have the less it will have defects and the maintenance will be lower. And with no reclining seats, the risk of having to turn around a plane will quite lower.

Why not make the seats more comfortable to begin with and make them permanently reclined? And what's with that forward pushing headrest? It's not "restful" at all. It downright gives one a head and neck ache! Boo on incivility! Boo on selfishness!

Well they tried in vain to get fat people to buy two seats, that did not get a lot of momentum, and just resulted in a few lawsuits. I don't think they'll make seats any better, specially since they can get people to pay extra for more leg room, which is still narrower than normal seats used to be 10-12 years ago. That said, I thought it was common courtesy to not recline your seat unless it's a child sitting behind you.

It's hard to fathom that they didn't get away with this considering what they do get away with. It seems simple. You should pay for two seats if you're large and take up two seats.
Well it was a PC-thing as some people thought that was equivalent to fat-shaming.

Yes. Unfortunately it isn't PC to ask a fat person to pay extra due to the amount of extra food they chose to eat. It is perfectly fine however to charge a tall person extra because they were born with a genetic predisposition to have long leg bones. At 180cm (6'4") my femurs don't fit between most airline seats even when the seats are upright.

The parts to this issue mystify me: 1) In general, airline seats recline. I should be able to recline if I choose too. 2) When you buy a ticket on a plane, you know seats recline. Be prepared to deal with it. 3) How on earth did a passenger get on board with an anti-recliner device? There was the no brainer. 4) The woman turning around and tossing the drink - me thinks, Mr. Anti-Recliner said something rude. Toss in the stupid TSA searches, parking, wait lines, uncivil service from airline staff, and I just don't fly if the trip is less than 5 hours. It's not worth the hassle. As far as fat people - that's just too f'ing bad. If you take up two seats, you buy two seats. I occasionally flew with small children. If they could sit on my lap, I saved the ticket (wasn't pleasant), but if they were too large - I had to pay for a another ticket. I think this is shaming me to use..... oh never mind ;)
