I have Windows XP and I want to format my hard drive and have a clean install. How do i go about doing this? I have done this many times with other versions of windows but don't know how to do it with XP. And what do I need to prepare for the process, other than the WinXP cd?

Boot from the WinXP CD, go through the setup wizard till you find the File system page. There will be a clean install option there.

I didn't explain the history of my machine have I? 1. Compaq Parisario 2200 upgraded hd from 1.5gb to 15gb (7200rpm)-installed w98 2. Built Socket7- AMDk6-2 550 mhz machine used the 15gb hard drive, went through driver hell for 2 months 3. installed winxp-home i thought it included IIS (cause of the nt background) 4. Installed WinXP Pro for IIS. Now it freezes everyday. Its froze today already. I think its time to format and reinstall. Thats Win98-WinXPHome-WinXPPro And plus theres this bloat of 4gbs that I don't know where it came from. -Steven

No no, I mean he upgraded his Operating System, not installed a new version. That's more trouble than it's worth.

Upgrading isn't so bad! I upgraded my P-Pro 180 machine from Win95 (original release) to Win2K beta3 without a hitch. It solved all the driver problems that Win95 never quite got right without any assistance from me - I was asleep at the time.:-O It is ok for women not to like sports, so long as they nod in the right places and bring beers at the right times.

I'm going to order a new motherboard and processor soon, my birthday is tommorow, and Instead of messing with the annoying drivers I plan on reformating and reinstalling. (Ofcourse I'm going to back up the entire hard drive before this) Is there any recommendations with this besides just the copying of files (MSDE/SQL Server stuff, "Music Licenses," outlook mailbox).. And Chris I'm still expecting that CP shirt :P. -Steven

Just install a fresh copy of XP in another windows directory, then install all your apps over the old ones (just for the reg/system files). Easiest way, then you can take your time doing it. I rated this article 2 by mistake. It deserves more. I wanted to get to the second page... - vjedlicka 3:33 25 Nov '02

Windows 95 to 2000 - don't you find your Windows directory is about 10-15 GB and you keep getting warnings that your registry size has exceeded 2 GB?

Not at all! That machine only had a 6 GB drive, partitioned into 3 logical drives, but Win2K had no troubles with it. It is ok for women not to like sports, so long as they nod in the right places and bring beers at the right times.
