Hey Rage, good to hear from you. I'm currently at a Sergeant training, and just got two days off for the last weekend (the first two free days for two weeks). My position later will include Win/Linux server and application maintenance including user training, and is therefore not far away from what I used to do before I joined army. It seemingly attracts morons, and I feel like I know all of them. I still do work at my Springlog Project (in the spare free time I get) and started writing a new article yesterday. And that's how my life will look like until April. What have you been up to?

I really liked Visio but job change to a company that wouldn't pay for it, hence Dia gets my vote used it extensively for bloody years.

IBM Rhapsody Modeler [^] Is a freeware version of their full blown product. I have worked for with the full-blown product 5 years. With it I designed/implemented systems using the code generator and model debugger (target languages c, and c++). Since UML has the concept of an "active class" the full-blown product is capable of generating multithreaded OS-adapted ready to run executables. Currently I use the freeware version (no code generator, no model debugger) to design and document designs in javascript and other languages. The freeware version has a simple report generator with which you can get .rtf files out of the model for audiences that are not technically versed. For others, since the tool is free, they can can use the model itself.

If you're going to use Visio, may I suggest using SmartDraw[^] instead. Much more intuitive and simpler to use. If you look into IBM Raphsody Modeler, you may as well look into Understand[^]. My bookmarks for UML are StarUML[^], Gliffy[^], and NinjaMock[^].

Site looks legit to me (I've bought a couple of products from them already)... however I also have my suspicions about the legality. Either way, they send you a product key which Microsoft accepts and haven't given me any crap about for over a year now and I've registered it obviously at Microsoft. I think if you read the fine print, the product key limits you to use the software only on one particular pc. So if you buy a new pc in the future you might run in to some trouble. Although I'd read up about it myself it I were you.

I tried a few before settling for http://www.draw.io/[^]. It's browser based, it integrates well with google drive/docs and does other kinds of diagrams pretty good too.

Yes, I read that and the lincesing you buy from microsft directly works the same way, so at least in this case, the price would be fair. I suspect they sell keys bought over volume licensing, which allows discounts.

Exactly! Give it a try. It sure saves you a arm and a leg, and when you upgrade in the future, you new improved versions of software will be available in any case.

It's been a while since I've needed to do any UML, but my favorite tool was Umbrello. None of the other tools I tried, both free and paid, came close. Like I said, though, it's been a few years.
