I am just pondering..... If it goes 'Yes' and it all goes horribly wrong, i'm gonna need an exit plan. (it could still go wrong with a 'no' as well depending on agreements). Requirements; A nice weather in the summer, snow in the winter + skiing on tap (say within an hour or so). Oil & Gas industry within region, preferably as not to have to do silly rotations like 4/4 Good education system, child friendly with no Extreme/bizarre cultural religious madness. e.g. woman can't drive etc. Thought about States/Canada/Oz/New Zealand/Qatar/UAE/Singapore/Cyprus.......Yes they all have their own oddities, but at least they are tolerable. Any thoughts?

New Plymouth. NZ. It has oil and gas industry. Small city safety and good education. Ski field in Central North Island about hour or so away. Not sure about the oddities of New Zealand as I live here and they probably normal to me. Don't know too much about New Plymouth per sec but have been there and is nice place. Any question about NZ let me know.. Ross

I'm sure I had a head hunter contact me about 9 months ago asking if I would be interested in an Plant/Ops managers job there. I think it was a local subsidiary of Shell. They appeared awfully keen. I think I still have the emails to go and check.

I don't know about the Oil & Gas industry. But Oz is bloody nice, mate. And there's skiing in parts (NSW notably) and better skiing in KiwiLand which is but a 3 hour flight away (you wouldn't want to live there, obviously, as is ably demonstrated by a) the number of Kiwis over here and b) Once Were Warriors Education system is probably not quite as fucked as elsewhere - we're child friendly without too many of the wrong sort of child friendly folk (if you get my drift) There's not too much in the way of bizarreness - and women can drive (you to the pub, you back from the pub) :) Looking forward to greeting you to our shores

Hope you don't mind me asking a question here, as someone currently living in Scotland, with an interest in the independence debate - You mentioned in a previous post that your rig had all been sent home at short notice for some hush-hush reason? Can you clarify what that was all about because it seems that it stoked a load of rumours about a huge new oil reserve being discovered in the Clair field? My gut feeling is that it's nonsense, but I'd really value the opinion of someone actually involved in the business directly. Andy B

It wasn't my rig that was demobbed. It turns out that there was a discovery, it was announced a week later in the papers. But it was pretty much a non-event and the companies involved share prices barely fluttered. All the talk about the Clair field is down to people with short memories. I remember when the Clair was first built, that it was always stated to be a multi-phase field development plan. That field is simply moving into the 2nd development phase, and suspect the next one will be in about 10 years. West of Shetlands has lots of potential, but it is very hard to operate, heavy crudes, deep water (past the ridge) and harsh environment, the issue is cost. It doesn't matter how much oil is left, cost is the governing factor. North Sea is still declining at a rate quicker than it is being discovered/exploited. If you take my employer, in the North Sea we are recognized as being 'the' best in class. We have the lowest lifting cost/barrel and highest uptime efficiencies and generating large cash flow, yet the parent company are potentially looking at disposing off us to concentrate on US growth. We are just waiting to hear, but it is very quiet, and it doesn't just effect us, but ALL their international assets including Egypt/Oz/Canada. Jana Partners bought a $1B stake in July and are demanding a split/spin-off of the 'international assets' Add to this that, the industry is resource constrained, you cannot get competent experienced teams for either offshore or engineering, everyone is moving overseas. this means to get people you need to pay and this puts costs up massively. Companies will then withdraw investment and go and spend their money in more profitable regions. I keep hearing the 'yes' group saying 'we can do this, look at Ireland/Norway/Iceland/Sweden etc.etc.' and yes they have done it, but cost of living is frightening and these countries went through decades of pain. You then have to look at international markets / fighting Europe / The rise of the East. To stand and compete against this you need to have clout, UK has clout, Scotland on its own doesn't. There is too much from the heart and not from the head going on. It is possible to still be a proud patriotic Scotsman and still be a part of a union. At the end of the day though, that is just my personal opinion.

Patagonia? It's a bit ... "windy", but they got the oil, they got amazing peaks with snow all year, as child-friendlyness of latin american countries (which is to say: great). Kirchnerism and Peronism certainly are bizarre, but have little impact on wifal drivability and similar matters. Not sure about the oil industry working conditions (but then, I donät even know if "4/4 rotation" means you'll be caught in a 4x4 roundhouse swing when your shift starts, just as warm up). Also, distances *are* big, not sure if you get snowy peaks and mother earth leaks are close enough for you, distances between places are usually measured in days.

What you've just explained there is more concise than anything I've heard from the Yes/No campaigns. This is the trouble with democracy sometimes - ignorance still has a vote.

Well if you can cope with another language (and there's lots of support for learning it if you can) then the answer is southern Germany! Dunno about oil/gas industry so that could be a deal breaker but wouldn't be surprised if Munich had work somehow related to that. Ticks all the other boxes nicely!
