I just got myself a new laptop (Dell Inspiron 8000 - awesome) and I have it running Windows 2000. I also have a Windows 98 SE box with a DSL connection to the Internet. I bought a crossover cable and got the two computers seeing each other's hard drives. Now what I'd like to do is get full access to Internet on my laptop using the DSL line on the Win98 machine. What's the best way to do this? I tried installing ICS on the Win98 box but for some reason it doesn't pick up the DSL modem's adapter (which connects via USB). Someone suggested using a proxy server (from AnalogX.com) and that allowed me to connect to the web. The problem is that when I went to play a game that uses the TCP protocol, it didn't work. Any suggestions? I'm looking for a cheap and easy way to have full Internet access on my laptop via my Win98 box. Thanks in advance, Alvaro

I use AllegroSurf...http://www.allegrosurf.com. The only problem with this situation is binding multiple ip's to win98 and a single nic. You can do it, its just weird...* Add a second tcpip to your network

        • unbind it from the dialup adapter
        • re-bind it to your nicWorks good, nice throughput and AllegroSurf only costs $49 bucks US for 3 licensed connections. My 2 cents. Frank

          > Dell Inspiron 8000 sweet! > Any suggestions? I dusted of my old 486 went out and bought two old ethernet(no-name) cards and a small 5 port hub(LinkSys), all in all it cost me around $60. I'm running FreeSCO on it, and so far it works like a charm. Have a good one, Ben Burnett --------- On the topic of code with no error handling -- It's not poor coding, it's "optimistic" ;)

ICS should work. Are you sure you have your Windows 2000 box setup for DHCP?

ICS works great and costs 0$. When you get your config right, all will work fine. Ed

I have to agree. I have been using 2 linksys routers and in 6 months have hardly ever had to reboot them. The current version of the firmware seems to work great. Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

I highly recommend the Linksys as well. Works like a charm, and you don't have to keep one of the machines on all the time. Nick

I run a very similar setup at home with two PC's running Win98 second edition. I use the AnalogX proxy server on the machine with the cable modem and *most* software works. Unfortunately the proxy doesn't have a complete Socks4/5 implementation, but things like ICQ and Microsoft Messenger can be configured to use HTTPS for their protocol. Unfortunately, though I have never been able to get any of the file sharing type programs to run except on the machine that has the cable modem. I have tried all manner of these on the other PC and they just don't seem to be configurable to go out through a proxy. I suspect that you'll find the same with some of the games that you are trying to use. Unless they can be configured to use a protocol that the proxy can accept, you'll likely not get them to work properly. If someone has had experiences other than this, I'd love to hear about how to get this kind of stuff to work. It probably means having to spend dollars for proxy software that is a little more sophisticated. Chris

I have a very similar setup and found WinGate to be the best solution. It works perfectly for me, and its cheap for home use. It comes with some small client software which means all software works with it proxy aware or not. Furthermore you don't have to configure proxy settings for any applications. Also, its ideal for the laptop as it means on the odd occaision you connect directly via a modem you simply disable the wingate client and everything works via your dialup. (Ps. No, I have no affiliation with wingate!) -- The Obliterator
