May be a British term? Parcel shelf, the shelf above the boot (trunk) space in a hatchback (?) car. Usually hinged at the top of the back seats and attached to the rear window by string so when you open the hatch it opens up too. Except I don't think I have ever owned a car that had all of the fixings for it in complete working order.

I had a parcel shelf in my first car a Vauxhall Cavalier 2 door salon and that was not a hatchback (the Audi was the same) - I remember cutting massive holes in it for the "new" speakers

Interesting that the article comes originally from someone using "spit and Image" rather than "spitting Image" - when the former predates the latter so, in fact, spitting image is the Eggcorn ** EDIT: I know it does point that out in the article - which is what I'm getting at - the article was about eggcorns, prompted by someone not using one.
