I didn't downvote you; however, I can see why you were. You posted 5 solutions to the same question! And three of them weren't even solutions. They were questions to the OP, not solutions. Frankly, I think it should be very obvious why you were downvoted. Does this make sense?

Maybe I should have added the additional information as comments rather than solutions, but that's semantics. As the OP requested further clarification (as he couldn't get my code to work) I provided further code to help him resolve his problem. My main point is.....why penalise someone from trying to help? I could just as easily have ignored his question, but instead I tried to help and was penalised for doing so. My posts were not in any way abusive, but were in fact polite and courteous, even offering to provide further help if needed.

My guess is that people thought you were trying to rack up points since adding a comment is only worth 1 point and adding solutions is 10 points. It looks like you're abusing the system.

Far from it. My intention is and always has been......to help people. I'll be more careful in how I reply from now on. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I have recently been heavily downvoted on a particular quick answer recently. Every single answer was downvoted, which seems rather unfair. We are all busy people, and yet we take time out of our busy schedules to help others. To be penalised for that doesn't seem fair at all. If the suggested answer is unclear, then ask for further clarification, not penalise someone who is trying to help. The whole concept of penalising someone for trying to help seems wrong to me. It puts you off from trying to help someone else. We all come here for the same reasons. To learn and to help others. That should only ever be a good thing.

Just wait until you've been down voted for a simple mistake (by a certain pariah on here), even in your phrasing of the answer. We don't always have the time to build a test environment and test our solutions. To me, it should be about removing a block from someone who is stuck or doesn't understand, not acting as unpaid consultants or teachers. I'm with you, it's about helping, although I fully understand Ryan's comment (which you have taken on board). But there are times ... To me, rep farming is silly and vain, but it feels like a personal insult when someone down votes your efforts. I'd rather not have the points in the first place.

I fully understand and take on board Ryan's comment. To be honest, it had never even occurred to me about the points, which is why I didn't understand the downvotes and hence my posting of this in the first place. I fully agree. We are here t help, and have limited time in which to do that, so our suggestions / solutions may not always exactly meet the user's needs. If that is the case, then simply say so, or clarify what you want further, but don't downvote for trying to help. Thanks for your reply, it's always nice to know you're not alone :)

I am new here and I have been downvoted quite a few times. Ryan's explanation is just perfect. Once I even asked why I was downvoted and I didn't get a reply. I left it at that. I don't think you should pay any particular attention to the points. They will keep on going up and down, mostly up, with time. Just keep up the good work because trust me, there are a lot of people who appreciate it. As for the rules, you can't expect to learn it all overnight. Everybody gets it right eventually.

              Warm Regards, Subho

Thanks for the reply. I find it annoying when someone downvotes you for simply trying to help. At least I've tried, so I don't get why anyone would dwnvote you for that. I've also noticed that some people will mark an article with a very low score and then not even justify why they gave such a low score. This has happened to me twice. On both occasions no justification was given for the low score. If you 're going to give an article a low score then you better be damn well able to justify that score.

I don't think this is allowed anymore. A vote of 3 or less requires a comment. It's mandatory I think.

The comment I got was something along the lines of "This is inefficient" but without any evidence, justification, reasoning or anything else to substantiate their statement. They awarded a mark of 1 but without any reasoning whatsoever.

Well, that's just plain rude. You can see who it is when they comment. Just ask politely. If that person stops replying or whatever, just ignore him and he will stop pestering you soon enough. Like I said, ignore and keep up the good work. :)

I'm seeing a pattern where "regulars" get +votes even when they have nothing particular noteworthy to say. It's the mutual admiration society.
