Don't know about the states, but here platform shoes are seen as sign of insecurity !!

If you are going to command the respect of people you care nothing about, as a powerful manager, platform shoes are an absolute necessity for the man of average (or below) height, so you may tower over the minions as you kanban-kaizen-iso-sigma them over the heads. Insecurity is what its all about. And they make you even more Agile to dance with the SCRUMmy little people. :)
