As those who follow my ramblings are aware, I have a quite portable windows laptop, but it's a bit large as a device for flying with. (No, I don't mean I don't need a plane. C'mon people!) So, I'm looking at 8 or 9 inch tablet. As I want it to be legit tax deductible for my side job company, I'd want to have the ability to edit Word documents on it, with highlighting, and edit history maintained. (I do proofreading for furriners writing academic papers in English, and they'd be peeved if I messed up their doc's table formatting and annotations). Anyone with experience running Office Mobile on android? Can you work without an internet connection for a while? (ie, on a plane!)? Does the one drive stuff give you local copies on your laptop? And any recommendations for a nice but not daft expensive tablet? I'm tempted by the LG 8.3 one, and also tempted to wait a few weeks for the Nexus 9. Iain.

I've not tried highlighting or edit history, but I use Kingsoft Office[^] on my Nexus 7, and it works just fine - it also claims to be 100% compatible with MS Office, so it should do what you want. I'd be tempted to try a Kingsoft/Dropbox combo for flights (but I'd want a real keyboard for any serious typing).

Bad command or file name. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaay...

Not sure if it meets all the criteria, or if its available where you are but I just wanted to mention how good the new Hudl 2 is. I got one a couple of days after the release and its a great toy.

Mrs Wife has a first gen Acus Transformer. I'm not sure of the new ones, but it is a good little slab with a detachable keyboard. Works well with [free] office clone and is reliable with plenty of battery.

Well, for the work I'm thinking of (proofreading), I kinda hope the writing will be the minority, so on screen wouldn't bee too bad. I wouldn't dream of creating documents without a real keyboard though!

I have heard excellent things about the Hudl, so I expect the 2 to be good too. But I'm not in the UK, so availability would be an issue. Can I just wander into a big Tesco and pick one up? (I'll be in blightly in a few weeks). Iain.

Isn't that getting a bit too close to a real laptop? I'll probably have my Yoga 2 Pro with me too... Iain.

Just reread http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/tablets/391081/tesco-hudl-2[^] and they basically say it's excellent value. I am tempted to pay a bit more for more though (claiming it as pre-tax sorta means the government pays half...) Have you noticed the lag they comment on? Iain.

Yes, no problem at all. I used Clubcard double up on some vouchers I had and got it for £65 pounds in vouchers which is great value for what you get. Its good value at the asking price IMHO.

I haven't noticed any lag problems with anything I use it for. Mainly email, F****ook, YouTube, Chrome casting etc. It should be root-able soon which is something I'm waiting for as I want to be able to use my 32GB microSD card as main storage for Spotify etc. After its rooted it won't be long before somebody has it running Windows. I'm not too sure why anybody would want to do that though, except "because they can".

This[^] is the absolutely best tablet currently on the market (but the market moves pretty quickly). That with Kingsoft WPS installed would meet your reqs.

This[^] is the absolutely best tablet currently on the market (but the market moves pretty quickly). That with Kingsoft WPS installed would meet your reqs.

I will definitely explore Kingsoft. I would be a bit nervous about ordering in $'s from a company that imports from China. I imagine their quality is as good as anyone else's but if there is a problem, I'd be a bit stuffed? ps, Living in Sweden, as you might not have know that!

                                        Isn't that more like daft?

Iain.

I have a couple year old asus transformer that I use for taking notes with evernote. It still get 6-8 hours of battery life with the detachable keyboard. I haven't used it for word docs, but the hardware is great. I haven't looked at the current version of it though.
