I just read...
-
that humans will create more information in the form of data in the next two days than was created in all of history up until the year 2003. I wonder what their definition of 'information' is?

I'll stick with the standard definition: "useful data", and call babysit* on that conclusion, because 99.93% of what he's calling "information" is absolutely useless data -- so useless, in fact, that the only people who read it are working for national security organisations. * See here[^].

Including more irrelevance than up to the year 2013.

It certainly looks that way -- because we do things properly, here at CP; we're a no-babysit bunch.

Link? Sounds like they are talking about "consuming bandwidth/transmitting data", not in the generation of "new information". In technical terms, all information is data, but nor all data is information. The fact that they have to stress the fact that they are talking about information as "data" hints towards transmission.

Apparently it was Eric Schmidt (of google) that said it at some conference. I'll try to find it when I'm in front of a computer.

Rats! This was posted, like, a day and a half ago and I'm just now reading it! That means I must have missed pretty much the whole thing! I always seem to arrive at the party when everyone is leaving. (Ooh. I just realized there could be another explanation for that last statement than just bad timing...)

Tx for the link; it's not about consuming data, but we do not generate that amount of data simply by adding tweets and FB-posts. 1024 HD movies on Youtube, with an hour of black behind it; the list of sites you visited; each email we reply to and include the complete conversation. ..that's not information, but data :)
