Then you discuss it like a civilised human being. You do not snipe like a coward from hiding, and you do not vote something as abuse unless it is abuse.

I think we've all had "less than optimal" discussions with him in the past, but that does not mean that anyone has the right to abuse the CP voting mechanism to take away his right to air an honest opinion.

Voltaire never said: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" But that doesn't make it any worse. It was Evelyn Beatrice Hall that ascribed it to Voltaire

I do not think a voltare meant tht a software site should publish political messages. In general i agree there ahould be a venue to vent them out. But not at a software site

Then you go for option B: Shut the f*** up. Now, how do you explain your politically motivated abuse of the CP voting system? Or will you be a much bigger man than I expect you will be, and just apologise for that abuse?

Controvesial political views should not be aired on a software site. From my point of view they do not belong to here They undermine the puepose of the site
Nick Polyak
Saying boycotting Israel is controversial would also be a controversial political opinion in quite a few places.

If you had actually read my message you would have noticed that Voltaire probably never said anything such. Point is though that free speech is the base of all freedoms. I'm not going to jump any conclusions though and assume that you were the one that reported the messages. But if you were, I'd like to ask you if you tried to discuss it with him in before hand or not.

He was calling for boycott of Israel in his signature. Very political, completely inappropriate here and has nothing to do with coding from my point of view.
Nick Polyak
Meh. I've just grown blind to signatures, and carry on happily with my life. This is a coding site, and I'm not going to summarily dismiss someone whose political viewpoints I don't necessarily agree with. Certainly not when it wasn't even the point of the thread he started.

Thanks for clearing that up. We have differing views on something. Now, according to your rules about how to deal with things that you disagree with, I shall vote your posting as abuse. The next time that someone says or posts something that you disagree with, either discuss it with them in a civilised way (moving it to the soapbox if it's political), or shut the f*** up -- DO NOT abuse the CP voting mechanism.

There are two venues on this site: The Lounge (here) for general discussions, and The Soapbox for politics and religion. If you don't like the discussions or their content you are free to comment, or ignore them.

So you think requesting international law, as judged by the UN, be enforced is unsuitable material for the lounge? :) Ah yes, Israel, that old nugget. Well, like it or not, I have a right to espress my opinions and denying me that puts you in the same boast as the Paris Islamicists.

No, its far more than that and always has been, which you are fully aware of, so don't try pretending that THAT is your excuse.

Cool! I'll have to boycott Israel in my sig, too! Or Syria. I'm allowed to boycott Syria, right? @rseholes who impinge on people's freedom of speech (whether I agree with their views or not) get short shrift, from me. The CP voting system was not instigated to be used for political means.

The Lounge has specific rules and his sig was a clear violation of it. I mentioned it to him long ago, although I didn't vote him down for it, but the sig clearly is political and should not be in the lounge.

 You are correct. It's a violation of Lounge rules and there is nothing wrong with ignoring it and there is also nothing wrong with reporting it. I think Mark's just looking to fight.

Wow. The old testament and the new testament working together to suppress the opinions of those who follow neither. Whatever next?

Quite right. Advertising isn't allowed, either, but plenty of people put links to their web-sites in their sigs. The followers of African religions don't complain about that, so their "Oh, it's not allowed!" is just an excuse for denying people's right to have opinions contrary to theirs. But the main point is that abusing the voting system in this way is harmful to CP, and their defence of it opens the door to even more trollish behaviour.
