Best things to spend money on

A day out with a loved one, be that an amusement park, museum, sight-seeing, you name it :D Things come and go, but memories are forever (unless you get some brain damage or disease, but at that point everything else might be pretty worthless too).

Travelling. Go meet other places, other cultures, other experiences. You have only one life to live, so make the most out of it, either alone or with someone else. I just wish I had more time and money to do it more often. My fingernails even grow when I do it :-D PS: Let's not go religious about the "one life to live" part.

Things that last and always give you joy. A nice pair of leather shoes, a fine watch, a good dog, professional cutlery, etc. If it lasts a decade or more, it's worth buying the best that you can afford.

I am a teacher and trainer. I disagree, education with online resources (udacity, coursera, udemy, kanacademy) are mostly free and teach you faster than anything you can spend money on.

Burn everything you have and build a new life in a new place with your money. The reason can be found in a story of The Psychology of optimal experience by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.

I agree with you, however, there are many careers that require an actual degree -- doctor, psychiatrist, lawyer, veterinarian, etc etc etc -- and a lot of the education in those fields requires hands-on work, not something you can get out of an online course. And (as my gf is observing, as she is getting her MA in psychology) education is not cheap. So I stand by my point that the best thing you can spend money on is education. Udacity had free courses, I think there are still some. But it is nowhere near what education cost in the US. The only jobs that require "school participation" are the one the necessitate a government licence. So a big part of the price is the licence. The only exception I am making are the job that require laboratory and rare furnitures a single individual can't buy. For all intellectual jobs that don't require dirty hands, if you want real education and not just the license, then I stay on my position : schooling is not the best solution. You'll be smarter and richer by reading everything you can about the subject at home, and reaching the community around the domain.
