I was considering doing a video in connection with an article I'm writing. What (free) software can I use to capture the Vistual Studio window (as opposed to the entire screen) as I'm using it? EDIT =============== I think the term I should have used was "screencast" as opposed to "screen capture".

I've used Microsoft's Community Clips for a few years now for training videos and product application demos. It allows you to capture screen regions, select specific appliccations or whole screen captures. It's free and there is no nag-ware. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/devschool/archive/2011/03/07/community-clips-one-of-the-best-and-easiest-free-video-screen-capture-available.aspx[^]

It was broke, so I fixed it.

I'm quite a fan of Screenpresso [^], it's free for personal use. It also is quite a lot of goodies for documenting screenshots.

Well damn! Thank you. :-D I've spent years cropping the entire screen to get only the focus window. Sigh.

This makes a printscreen : it does not record a video.

Definitely Greenshot for still capture--very configurable, nice UI to get only the image you want, and configurable with regards to saving, edit tools, etc. Especially good with capturing screenshots of dynamic menus (web pages and such); just hit the "Print Screen" button and you have everything you need.

Jing from TechSmith, same people who make Snag-It. We use it a LOT. It has 2 capture buttons, one for video and one for just the screen. You can save the file locally or upload it to their server and share the link. The capture Video works great! As an example: [^] We have been using it for years. Love it! Kirk Out!

For screenshots I give my vote to Greenshot, been using it for a while now. I recall some problems with capturing the Chrome window but couldn't put my finger on the cause being due to a dual screen setup or capturing the browser itself. CamStudio looks great will have to give it a shot :) (shamelessly returning to topic)

Think I had some problems a couple years ago when I first started using it but when I reloaded my system a while back I must have gotten an updated app or my there was something wrong in my setup either way haven't had any problems since and I reloaded back in the spring some time. I love greenshot it just works.
