Is Code Red really all it's made out to be?

"The 19 July Internet Slowdown was NOT due to the [Code Red] worm," it [Net monitoring firm Keynote] said bluntly in a statement.

"There's been more hype than havoc," said Graham Cluley of anti-virus company Sophos.
...
The blame for the hype has been laid squarely at the door of the US National Infrastructure Protection Centre which, said Mr Cluley, has a history of making predictions that have not come true. Full Story So, what do you think - hype or havoc? David Wulff dwulff@battleaxesoftware.com

code red is just supposed to be spreading itself for now... nothing more... on august 20th it is supposed to go active and actually start cause major issues. we will have to wait till then to see if it actually causes any real damage. I suppose I didn’t really word the thread properly. What I was trying to point out was that the media has blown any kind of reality, as to the damage this worm will cause, completely out of proportion. It’s a well-known fact that “bad news is good news”, and by scaring your readers, you have a better chance of acquiring them in the future. It’s just that with so much of this going round nowadays, it’s difficult to find an accurate opinion on the scale of damage the worm is supposed to cause. That is what I tried to covey when I said: “is this hype or havoc”. Probably not very clearly, mind you. David Wulff dwulff@battleaxesoftware.com

There won't be anything .. they just spreading fear and over-reacting .. I used a eeye checker tool and scanned thousands of IPs to see how vulnerable the servers are? Guess what, only 2 severs were not patched!! Tons of alerts and reports .. but if you checked the C|net latest reports you will notice that the *experts* are disappointed because the worm did not cause the harm they were expecting! ;P // RM

Reminds me of Y2K... only the name is not as catchy. >>> The blame for the hype has been laid squarely at the door of the US National Infrastructure Protection Centre which, said Mr Cluley, has a history of making predictions that have not come true. <<< I get the impression that the NIPC is nothing more than bunch a paranoid security freaks. -Ben --------- On the topic of code with no error handling -- It's not poor coding, it's "optimistic" ;)

It strikes me that for home users the SirCam virus is much more of a threat than Code Red (I've been sent a dozen copies in the last week alone), but I haven't seen a word about it in the general media...:suss: I can only speculate that the fact that the worm causes websites to be publicly defaced (with a potential loss of revenue) and tries to attack the White House site makes it newsworthy, whereas the wasted time of thousands of ordinary people trying to erradicate a virus at home isn't, because we can't bill anyone for it... Yeah, its hard to know the truth until it really happens. The problem I see is that Russ Cooper the list owner of NTBugTraq, has also predicted an internet meltdown. In my opinion this is just a hype, but Russ is also a very well respected person in the Security community, so its hard to tell... (2b || !2b)
