Somebody must have written this already...

Anyone know of a utility that will decode simple substitution codes? That is, given a code that is a simple letter-to-letter substitution, and a message, the program would use such resources as letter frequency analysis, spellchecker, etc. to find possible matches and display them for browsing? It would also be nice if it could do something where I plug in a known part of the message and it tries extrapolating from there, i.e. if I knew a person's name was in it. I just know that someone must have written this by now, somewhere...

Something somewhat similar but not exactly what you are asking for is available through windiff.exe. -Nick Parker

Hmm... got it open, but I don't see how it could be used as such...

And it's part of a mystery story... http://www.iath.virginia.edu/utc/minstrel/mifieapat.html[^] I remember that I have written an file for single and double character frequenecy analysis in Matlab a long time ago. Perhaps I can find the .m files if you are interested.. /moliate

Didn't you get the special release version of windiff? ;P Just kidding, I have had a cold for the last few days and I saw "to find possible matches and display them for browsing" and started to type. Hopefully my posts will become more sensible as I get better. ;) -Nick Parker
