So I enrolled in a Bach. Sys Admin last year and it didn't work out very well. The College was just screwed up. I've been doing a Diploma in IT (Web Dev) elsewhere since and everything's going really well. However... Have you noticed how everything you do at College or UNI now is all about reports? Like... Everytime you have to do something, you gotta write a report first! That's so annoying! I self-taught myself programming when I was 17. And I've been building lots of things for myself ever since. So when I sign up for a course, I just want the paper to say that "Yeah he can do it". But no... They have to chuck in all of this other crap like writing Analysis' and Reports and other arbitrary junk that you can't even find any info about online. No wonder this world is so screwed up! You can't ever get anything done anymore because we're all too busy writing freaking reports about what we're about to do! You wanna build a database? Write a report first! You wanna create a website? Write a report first! You wanna eat dinner??? WRITE A REPORT! ...first. Oh, what's that Evil Iceblock? You wanna take a dump? NUP, SORRY! YOU GOTTA WRITE A REPORT ON THAT FIRST! SCREW YOU AND YOUR REPORTS!

You wanna get money from your employer for new office equipment or software? You write a report. Sorry kiddo, that's the way the world works. Thanks for reporting your findings. ;P

And where's your report before you could post this thread? ;P You get an upvote for that.

Your time will come, if you let it be right.

That's pretty much the same as all the project planning stuff I had to learn. In the 5 companies I worked for in the last 13 years I've never drawn up any process or system flow charts or any Pert & Gantt charts. Every time you ask about those everybody just laughs at you.

I translate your "Report" into requirement specs, design doco, use cases etc etc etc. On any reasonable size project there is a shit load of doco and planning to get through before you can start coding. The idea that you can get an idea and immediately start coding only works for prototypes and toy (personal) projects.

In your case there is perhaps not too much of a need for preparation as you have experience, however... the number of times I have worked with more junior developers who jump into coding, before they have understood the goal of what they are doing, are countless. So yes it's a pain but I don't see it as necessarily a bad thing for some people to have to show that they understand what they are about to do. It also has the effect of covering your ass when the project manager/client states that they did not ask for a burning black unicorn but for a pink bejewelled unicorn. You can clearly point to the spec that they signed off on showing that they did ask for the unicorn from hades model.

Is this for real? Are colleges finally giving students things to do that will be useful when they get out into the real world?!? Unbelievable! Keep writing those reports!
