A Royal Air Force plane is listed as missing after a US Patriot missile hit it. "I can confirm that the British plane was hit by a Patriot," a US Central Command official said here. "The crew is missing." The official, who asked not to be named, gave no more details. A Ministry of Defence official in London earlier said the plane was missing after an operational mission and "might have been engaged by a US-operated Patriot missile battery near the Kuwaiti border". Report...[^] Recently so many mistakes happening in this war.. X| Don't  and drive.

I thought the Patriot's had an internal FoF (Firend or Foe) system to avoid that. I bet a VBer has a job at Raytheon. Regardz Colin J Davies

I'm guessing the concept of a 2 hour movie showing two guys eating a meal and talking struck them as 'foreign' Rob Manderson wrote:

I must say I am amazed at how much you guys are following this war. Are you junkies or do you really care so much? FYI I am just curious. Not trying to come across as uncaring or a heartless bastard.

Quite a co-incidence but I re-watched We Were Soldiers just last night with my dad. Good movie, certainly more for the battle field sense than for anything else though. Blach Hawk Down IMO had more impact on me as a "this is what it is like" movie. Un-relenting chaos. Though WWS showed the indescriminatory nature of war. Of all things the thing I fear and hate about me personally going into a war the most is how who lives and who dies is based on so little. The way a band of men charge a line and there is no rhyme or reason as to which of them is shot and which is not, who falls and who does not. You step right, he steps left, he dies, you don't. You kneel to tie your laces, he remains standing, you die, he does not. That bit scares me no end. Also in WWS I liked that they showed the enemy as living, breathing, caring humans. Most Vietnam movies portray the Vietcong as heartless monsters. You say you were a vet of Desert Strike. Were you in the thick of things? If so I would think chaps like you would sneer at movie representations of the battle field.

I check the per-day summary lists of events on the BBC News website every half hour or so to keep abreast of the latest coalition propaganda, and I check back with BBC Monitoring a couple of times a day for the Iraqi/Arab propaganda, and see how much of it correlates. If you are interested the links are below: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/2877131.stm[^] (only valid for another few hours, then a new page will be created for tomorrows summary) http://www.monitor.bbc.co.uk/index.shtml[^] I care a great deal - I like to keep informed so I can hang my head in shame at the mess that is being made in my name. When it comes round to bite us in the arse I want to have some understanding of why and when the shit hit the pan. And I greatly enjoy (and I cannot emphasise that enough) how old Tony Blair has been looking these past few weeks. He has taken many years off his own life, and for that at least I am grateful. :((

You being a Pom have valid reasons to care so much because it is your name being fired off with every round. I care that a war is happening, but then there are plenty here in Africa already and elsewhere so it seems a bit sad this one is being so hyped. But honestly I feel so removed from this conflict. Nothing has changed in my daily life, not much will either. Sadly the only thing that affects me is the price of oil. Wether I keep abreast of what is happening or not makes very little difference. To me it is what happened leading up to the war and what happens after the war that are important. What happens in the war is just the execution of a plan. That friendly fire brought down a helicopter, that two helicopters collided and that there has been some unexpected resistance is pretty meaningless for most of us. *shrug* I care much more about the Congo war than this one.

As for as i've heared the Geneva convention only stops people filming it. Anyone is allowed to show it. However ethics should state that networks shouldn't show it because it breaks the convention. Anyone know any different?

It is hard to avoid, I've got access to five news channels plus regular programming on the BBC has been changed to bring us News specials. It is hard to avoid the war. Not that I'm trying too hard to avoid it... it is one of the most important things of our time. The outcome of the war is affect all of us for a long time. The only trouble is, most of the coverage is crap. Piss poor analysis, rumours and hearsay. We are fed the propoganda from both sides of the conflict, but it is reported as news. Michael 'War is at best barbarism...Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell.' - General William Sherman, 1879

Yes, as much as you can be being on an aircraft carrier(USS Carl Vinson which is now in Korea, she is the best Carrier in the Pacific fleet, IMO). I was in Desert Strike which was in '96, most people get this confused with Desert Storm. We were only supposed to be in the Persian Gulf for 3 months, but we were extended another month. I was an AK, Aviational Storekeeper. My main job during West Pac(our 6 month cruise) was working a daily report called the "Suspense Report" we had two software applications for keeping track of the aircraft parts, alone with other supply materials, and ordering them. They both, in theory, were in sink(sink?) with eachother, but some transactions to did transfer over, then it would show up on my report. On hand balance is a major factor in keeping the planes flying, if things got to out of wack, the birds could be down for days, instead of operational. That West Pac we set a record for fewest "Off Ships" meaning, we didn't have to look elsewhere for parts we couldn't find onboard. Things we intense those 4 months, we were all doing our duties. I kind of miss it.:-D Later,

As for as i've heared the Geneva convention only stops people filming it. Anyone is allowed to show it. However ethics should state that networks shouldn't show it because it breaks the convention. Anyone know any different?

I think the difference was that the Iraqi state television actually was "interviewing" the soldiers. That and the fact all the dead soldiers were shot in the head. I have seen pictures of Iraqi soldiers captured that were filmed by news crews, hover, I haven't seen (or heard of) them being interviewed. I must say I am amazed at how much you guys are following this war. Are you junkies or do you really care so much? FYI I am just curious. Not trying to come across as uncaring or a heartless bastard.

I would bet that the gung ho part is also partly fear or uncertainty. Not saying it to talk anybody down, but I think that anyone who realizes what war really is can't help being at least concerned Uptight Ex-Military Republican married to a Commie Lib - How weird is that?
