What to use as an alternative to Acronis? I've used them for years but their newest version is garbage. It used to just work and now it's been dumbed down to where it's an buggy, unreliable POS. I had also purchased their Disk Director 12 in a bundle deal and when I uninstalled True Image 2015 it removed system hooks and Disk Director no longer works either. They won't respond to any form of communication, all communication just goes into a black hole. I've used EaseUS before, but it's been years. Had to use it one time when I couldn't get True Image to clone a disk so I downloaded the EaseUS free version and it worked flawlessly. Also looking at ShadowProtect by StorageCraft and according to research is the premier but twice the price of EaseUS, is it worth the extra or would EaseUS be good enough for a lone developer with a single desktop system?

New version: WinHeist Version 2.1.0 new web site. When you are dead you don't know it, it's only difficult for others. It's the same when you're stupid.

I only use Acronis to make images of disks. For this I use a free Western Digital version, that you can download from the WD website. The only problem is that the WD version only works if you have at least one WD drive attached to the machine. It has been working great for many years. Last year I tried a trial version of Acronis 2014 but could not get it to work at all. So I dumped it like a hot potato and went back to the old WD version, that still serves me well to this day. I don't know whether the version that WD currently offers on their website, is the same as the old version that I have.

I'm using Macrium Reflect. Had no troubles with that so far but admittedly I'm only using the basic functionality of taking and restoring disk images.

Mike, You might give one of the following a try: Commercial: Macrium Reflect : www.macrium.com Open Source: Clonezilla : clonezilla.org I have used both of these, but I like Reflect better because I think it is a bit easier to use.

Hmm reckon it would be worth while?, I would assume that most have backup planes/software that they are comfortable with.

Speaking for myself: I would like to see it. I may want to dump my version of Acronis due to the Western Digital constraint, but no way am I going to pay for their product that is supposed to work with any make drive!

I have 3 WD drives and downloaded the Acronis WD version and it wouldn't run either. A little window came up and read Attach and WD drive to continue but no drives listed and of course there was a link to buy the full product. Uh let me think about that for a minute...I don't think so!

I used to use that a lot! :) I worked in a lot of small R&D shops and on a limited budget I used whatever was free because the companies I worked for usually didn't put out for frivolous stuff like software! What the hell have I got a software team for? :)

In certain instances used with the FOAD paradigm it serves as a deterrent to would be critics.

We adopted a quote by Konstantin Jireček that I used to use quite a bit with the sales people; “We, the unwilling, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, for so long, with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing.”

Try Image for Windows/Dos/Linux (http://www.terabyteunlimited.com[^]). I'm using it for years to clone my disks. They also have a very nice partition manager.
