What to use as an alternative to Acronis? I've used them for years but their newest version is garbage. It used to just work and now it's been dumbed down to where it's an buggy, unreliable POS. I had also purchased their Disk Director 12 in a bundle deal and when I uninstalled True Image 2015 it removed system hooks and Disk Director no longer works either. They won't respond to any form of communication, all communication just goes into a black hole. I've used EaseUS before, but it's been years. Had to use it one time when I couldn't get True Image to clone a disk so I downloaded the EaseUS free version and it worked flawlessly. Also looking at ShadowProtect by StorageCraft and according to research is the premier but twice the price of EaseUS, is it worth the extra or would EaseUS be good enough for a lone developer with a single desktop system?

Believe it or not, the "File History" utility built into Windows 8.1 works just fine. It's reliable and just works in the background. You don't even have to administer the thing once it's set up. Just make sure all your content is in one of the four storage hives (Documents, Pictures, etc...). I'm an independent developer myself and it's made backup of the system absolutely a no-brainer.

I've used Acronis True Image for years. They used to be a lot better at fixing issues. I stopped using it at version 2013 but that version still works fine for me. I never had a need to upgrade and then I added a home server to my network and allowed it to handle backups. It's too bad to see a formerly successful product go down hill.

Try DriveImageXML[^], it's free and it worked the last time I tried it (windows xp times)... :thumbsup:

DriveImageXML. It's free for non-commercial use. I use it every two weeks on my Win-7 machines. I haven't had to do a full disk restore (lucky me), but have browsed into the image to copy out individual files and folders.

I wish I still had that version. If I went back through backups I my accidentally have a copy but I'm sure the 240 character product key is long gone! :)

Thanks for the heads up. I started using a product several years ago to keep passwords and product keys as a precaution!

I'm a lone developer and I use a single desktop. Attached to my desktop is a Netgear NAS with 4x2 TB disks. I have used StorageCraft for almost 3 years. I have used StorageCraft to restore whole hard-disks as well as restore selected directories and files. StorageCraft automatically backs up my projects directory 8 times a day and has never failed me. Prior to discovering StorageCraft, I've used Nero, Acronis as well as several others that I've forgotten about. About 18 months ago I had an issue (I honestly can't remember what it was) and I rang them. Their support was immediate and solved my issue within a couple of hours. They also took the time to explain some of the intricacies of the product as clearly I needed a bit of extra help :-) I've never used EaseUS. If you chose StorageCraft then all I can say is that you won't be disappointed.

Thanks Glen, Of all the people that have responded I don't think one has recommended EaseUS, I downloaded to a VM running Win10 so we'll see how that goes. I downloaded a trial of StorageCraft and really liked it but just can't justify the $100 tag. I don't make money from my software and am on a very fixed income so it's hard to buy high dollar items especially after putting out for Acronis. I did get an old, stable version of Actonis to work on my machine so until I ungrade to Win10 later this year that will have to do then I will revisit StorageCraft which is what I will probably go with.

It's good to hear from someone else that is constrained by dollars. My wish list is large and I get frustrated when there just isn't enough money to mix with the dev's that have corporate millions behind them. Backups though are very important - I just don't know what I would do if I lost a weeks work let alone the whole kit and caboodle!! Best wishes and good luck...

It's good to hear from someone else that is constrained by dollars. My wish list is large and I get frustrated when there just isn't enough money to mix with the dev's that have corporate millions behind them. Backups though are very important - I just don't know what I would do if I lost a weeks work let alone the whole kit and caboodle!! Best wishes and good luck...

Yeah that's why I got concerned when the new version of Acronis turned out to be so flakey. Anyway for now I'm OK I've got a backup on my dev machine and another on an external MyPassport drive.

I liked the old Acronis, and liked it less each subsequent release. I have used CloneZilla, and liked it; but it's not for those who need a GUI. I found it was the best at adapting to differences in hardware.

I found True Image 2013 to be the last stable release, everything after that use at your own risk!

I've been using CrashPlan[^] to backup from my workstation to local storage (a Synology NAS) and been pretty much happy with it. It works (as far as I can tell) as well as Time Machine on my Mac at home, that is - reliably and I don't notice it running. It does also offer (for $) storage on CrashPlan's servers, but I'm not going there...

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/[^][^] Top quality, and great support. Been using their Image for DOS for years, creating and restoring hundreds of images on multiple computers, never had a problem. What I especially like is that it has byte-for-byte verify both when imaging and restoring which guarantees that the restored system is 100% identical to the one the image was made from. BootIt Bare Metal is excellent too for disk partitioning etc...
