Google now tries to holds you to ransom to get your telephone number
-
So i had this old Youtube account and wanted to log in but as you know Youtube makes you use Google gmail and google then pops up a message saying that for my protection they need to send me a SMS to my phone just to ensure its me. Are you stupid or something. Google is not getting my phone number for any price since they have spy scripts (Often Hidden in SSL) on just about ever web-site in the world and they still want more blood. I went to create a new YT account and opted out of receiving a SMS text message by linking to an old email address and as soon as i went to use the account, youtube asked for my phone number again. Don't be fooled people, it's not for your protection but so the nanny state can pay google/YT to spy on you and know ever word you post on the internet. Who's internet, Our internet so get lost Google

Seems like they're getting more persistent all the time. I don't give out my phone number to just anyone...what kind of guy do you think I am? :)
New version: WinHeist Version 2.1.1 new web site. I know the voices in my head are not real but damn they come up with some good ideas!

I had the same thing a few weeks back, with IMDB, but they gave me the choice of phone or credit-card number. There is no good reason to give either to a web-site in any on-the-verge-of-totalitarianism country, so I deleted my account. It's a bit more of a wrench deleting an e-mail account, but it's the advisable course of action.

If there is a non-zero percentage (however small) of people who don't have phones, such a policy would exclude them entirely. And, as someone mentions above, there's a 'Skip this Step' button.
-
Anytime google has asked for my phone number there has always been a Skip link.
There are only 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't.
Yes skip worked but like i said as soon as i went to post anything or upload then up popped the message again. My old YT account is now dead because they thought i would give them what they wanted if they hijacked my account, they were wrong. You can set up an SMS on-line service to fool them but i just told the misses to pick up a 99p G3 sim card so it will be used once and then thrown in the bin. Twatter also tried the trick of making me give them a valid email address after i forgot the one used to create the account so they can full my real account with spam. I refused and lots of other people too because some months later they dropped it and let me back in without having to replay to an email that of course, was sent for my protection. Twiiter is full of adverts and spam bots, takes one to know one if anyone needs a twitter bot

Skip works untill you go to leave a comment or upload something on Youtube and then you are back to the start as they block you and ask to send you a SMS again. Google sells data to anyone that will pay and letting them have you address, phone number makes the data worth a lot more and i already get machines ringing me up

Facebook uses my phone number. Anytime I try to log into Facebook from an unknown computer I'm texted a special code. I appreciate the additional security. BTW, if Google wanted to they could send a group of guys to your house. They could black bag you and string your arse up in the town square. They could claim you were a 'terrorist' and nobody would give a crap. In short, you're trying to protect the wrong thing - the robbers left 15 minutes ago with anything of value.

"on-the-verge-of-totalitarianism country" Yes thats a man that gets it. Google started with free canndy, level playing field and now look at it ! Don't put google spyware all over the site and your site, no matter how good ends up on the back pages and they even try to tell us how we should write HTML and not to put javascript redirect on A-Tags and yet Google is the worlds worse at that one. Personlized search results is just another way of saying censorship and thats comeing form the bigest monoply known to man.

Maybe it is a country thing. From India, can upload a video without giving any phone number.

I use CyberGhost and can connect from India but Google knows all the addresses used by Cyber-Ghost and Tor exit nodes so i am stuffed. Code i should run more often connects to Google over SSL (Often they force browsers to use HTTPS) and sends them a very slow stream of random searches so i get my own back because the data becomes worthless

Lots of people who have flead facebook don't share your views but if they have your number then rest assured it has been traded with Google. I know this sounds silly unless you think about it but too me data has become a type of bit-coin to be traded, replicated and swapped as if it has real value. (Banks also trade and replicate money, it's called fractional reverse banking if you care to check) its a bit like the 400 trillon $UDS worth of credit default swaps that are washing around the banking system where the name of the game is to accumlate more even if like funney money in the banking system this wealth can never be cased in for real goods without crashing the system. Just think you are helping Facebook who has never turned a cent in profit during its history to push up its share value to something above $10bn so how does that work

So, after reading the comments, the general thought is... I want a FOR PROFIT organization to created and host a series of services that I can use FOR FREE without having to be bothered with advertising. If you want to dance, you have to pay the band...
-
Are you sure it's not part of the 2 step verification system? Many online accounts are going that way...
Contrary to popular belief, nobody owes you anything.
I understand you might find this hard to beleive because it goes against everything your are being told but i scanned 700,000 google Urls (It was all i could find in English) and three months later I tested to see who was still up and running and if the site went 404 then i ran a DNS-Looup to see if the domain name had been removed. Take it from me small sites are droping like flies because people have learned that you cannot make a profit from running a little site with adverts at the top that cover something like "How to knit" and google is playing a big part in this happening because not only do they get no income but these sites get few visitors and are hidden on page 99 of googles personlized search results even if they are good unless they pay google some cash. Two stage registration won't help matters. Sorry i don't know if big sites are getting bigger but i do know that the end result is less work for us.

The joke is most of them have never made a cent in profit and yet are valued at billions. Competion does not work in the current monoply and even if you took what twatter is doing, improved it by 200% then your site would not see the light of day because the big all american boys will push you out. I for one won't be paying peeping toms to look through my letter box who all received seed money from the CIA or NSA and we all know who i am talking about.

there's a very good reason: it helps keep people from hacking into your account(s).

It's just a phone number man. I'm all for privacy, but it's not like they're looking up your wife's skirt.

...ummmm.... Two Step Verification doesn't have anything to do with Google search or advertising. You seem to have a bias and an agenda as it relates to Google. Good luck with that...

I am no expert in anyway when it comes to G3/4 phones but did you know that network providers are not allowed to encrypt voice calls and you have to resort to installing a App on both ends of the call to stop anyone listening in. Why do you think the law is like that ? Are we all to be treate as terrorists, guilty until proved inocent. Stupid David Cameron even talked about banning HTTPS on the internet and was shown to be a fool but SSL is not half as secure as people think it is anyway, see my research Did you also know that fake phone masts are being set up all the time to intercept calls and then relay them on to real cell phone stations or they can even do this from helicopters. No they might not be looking up my wifes knickers but i don't want it public knowlage if i want too look only to find out that Google has traded my gay boyfreinds address for this bit of information. If they are going to such lengths to spy on us then i will go to any lengths to stop them.
