Looking for a good book
-
I just got back from vacation in the Western Carribean and finally had time to do some reading for fun. One of which is "World War 3.0, Microsoft vs. The U.S. Government and the Battle to Rule the Digital Age". I found this to be a very interested topic and was curious if any CPians had other suggestions (I usually trust the Amazon rating for books, but I regard the opinion of people in this community a little bit higher). So what books are must reads for me? I am a little bit "Microsofted" out right now but am looking for other books along this line. Chris LaQuerre Internet Technologies Consultant

Anything by Richard Feynman. :-D Or this: The Measure Of All Things[^] which I'm really enjoying. A mix of history, science, politics, intrigue, and sex. Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.

Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond (some very bright CPian recommended it to me. Very interesting book. It is a long read though!) Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan (ties in nicely with GGS above.) Life of Pi by Yann Martel (fantastic book, one of the best books I have ever read, amazing writing and a story which has peaks and troughs like I have never experienced before.) No IT books I can recommend, not something I actually read at all.

Microsoft deliberately adds arbitrary layers of complexity to make it difficult to deliver Windows features on non-Windows platforms--Microsoft's "Halloween files"Yep, he was quite clued up, and had a fantastic perception of life. Also, he was not too bad at Physics either. ;) I think, the thing I thought that made his so uniquie was his ability to see though the crap that would blind so many and get right to the heart of the matter, and provide a solution if it was needed. That and he explaind it so well. "One sig, seeking companionship with another sig, but have to keep it from sigs owner, as he get jelous." - Giles' Sig

these two are SF/Fantasy, but extremely well done: Perdido Street Station - China Mieville The Gift - Patrick O'Leary The Vintage Book of Amnesia - collection of short stories about memory loss. more interesting than it sounds. non-fiction: Guns, Germs, Steel (as Paul Watson recommended) The Origin of Virtue - Matt Ridley Our Band Could Be Your Life - (Michael Azerrad). tracks the rise and fall of several 'indie' bands of the 80s and 90s (Fugazi, Nirvana, Butthole Surfers, Black Flag, Big Black, etc). :) -c

Okay this one isn't a techie book, but it's one that really stirred my emotions when I read it last year. It truly is a superb piece of classic literature: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
