Android app recommendation

I'm always forgetting to unmute my phone when I get home on days I take it to work (I can't take it into the lab I spend most of the day working, and I refuse to be *that* person who abandons his phone to annoy co-workers[^] all day long). Since it appears there're about a million apps for this, I decided to ask the hive mind for which ones did/n't work for them. As for general preferences, I'd prefer something that doesn't think it should be running my entire life if I let it on my phone; and would rather pay 99 cents than with my privacy.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.publicobject.shush&hl=en[^] Works on the time dimension rather than space - whenever you put your cell on silent/vibrate, allows you to specify a timeout after which the ringer volume is restored. You have the option to put it on silent indefinitely as well choose the volume it gets restored to.

It obviously runs at startup (it _has_ to, given the functionality) but other than that, its permissions are a big fat zero.

Don't know; but I do know that the area I want it auto-muted (two buildings a quarter mile apart), and the areas I don't want automatic control (the rest of the world); are far larger than the maximum range of an NFC tag. Also, I'm not seeing how scanning tags is supposed to be any less prone to oops I forgot than mashing a button.

With NFC's you aren't exactly "scanning" tags. You just have to bring the phone close enough for it recognize it. Samsung did something where you could do various things with NFC thingies with their TecTiles[^] But it only works with a select number of devices. I guess it's kinda interesting but has a very limited use and I suppose it isn't exactly what you're looking for.

How about a sticker on the steering wheel of your car that says "Unmute your phone dickhead!"?

Since you do remember to mute your phone, if you Android 5 or higher, there is an easy solution. On the main lock screen, try to change the volume. When you do a sub-screen will show up where you can change your phone to Priority Mode[^] for up to 8 hours. Then it won't ring for 8 hours and auto turn off at the end of that time. Hogan

You're welcome, Rage :) I'm kinda surprised (and disappointed) it doesn't have this feature built in. My plain old Nokia 3120 (not 3120 classic) that I bought in 2004 and still use has not only 6 customizable profiles (a profile can mute all calls except from the Family group, for instance), but also the ability to "time" them so they expire at a set time. For instance, I put my cell on silent every night but use this feature so the ringer is restored at 05:30. While I love the customizability of Android, there are some VERY basic things it leaves out that even the dumbest of phones could do 10+ years back. You shouldn't have to install an app for everything. I love my Nokia's calendar feature, every Android calendar I've tried, including Google calendar, has to take a backseat to this.

Do you have a problem with reading comprehension? I'm looking for something auto-magic because I keep forgetting to unmute it when I get home. Setting it in flight mode on arrival instead of adjusting the volume button down completely undermines the only reason I occasionally bring it to the office: needing to check something I can't via my work computer at some point while I'm in the office.

I have 5.0; but it looks like HTC has skinned priority mode out of existence on my phone. :sigh: I get a popup with just the master slider and a gear button. The latter lets me adjust volumes for a few other things independently of the master volume but doesn't have anything that looks like what Gizmodo's showing. In any event, I'd need a 9 hour mute time.

Never occurred to me that there could be an app for that (I share this mute/unmute 1st world problem with you), but it sure could come handy ! I thought you were exaggerating it with "a million apps for this", but a quick google points to articles like 50+ Best Apps to Mute/Unmute your phone :wtf: I am eager to know what the fellow CPians would propose. (I think an app that unmutes it as soon as I am home = in range of my home wifi)

I use Ring Scheduler. It allows you to set times to mute / change volume and you can do it for set days of the week or every day. I've set it once and never had to worry about it again. It is easy to cancel the setting for a given time by just adjusting the phone settings as you normally would.

I don't connect to work's wifi (I'd need to install a large package of corporate crapware to do so), and want work to be the exceptional case; so triggering off of that wouldn't work for me.
