For those who don't know, a "float" is a scoop or more of ice cream (usually vanilla), in a glass, then some flavored soda (aka "pop" ...think Coke but don't stop there) is poured over it. A float, aka an ice cream float, was one of my favorite childhood summertime treats. Last night we topped all I've ever had before. We started with a supreme ice cream[^], one that is so good a writer for the New York Times said it was worth the trip to Cincinnati. That's like a Parisian saying some food in Dover was worth the trip in January. One of my favorite flavors for the soda is something called "root beer". [^] Normal root beer is basically a tea made from bark and roots of trees. Well...my favorite daughter favorite boyfriend brought over some Not Your Father's Root Beer...[^] Yum!

And that's exactly how that stuff tastes. Only during survival training I ever had to think about the nutritious value of tree bark or roots.

We made ours with Cream Soda[^] instead of root beer and it was called an "Ice Cream Soda". I remember my grand parents had anodized aluminum glasses that were only used for that (eaten outside around the pool)

Now you've gotten me thinking about all the things I loved as a kid. And have been severely disappointed in as an adult. Topping the list: Moxie. Tastes like cigarettes, now. Not smoking them...eating them. But even Root Beer is just not making it anymore after a sip or two. Cream soda? Nope. Can't drink it anymore. And don't get me started on Birch Beer.

Don't even get me started on Graeters... I might have to make the extremely strenuous 5 minute walk there tonight... As far as floats go, vanilla ice cream with orange soda is pretty darn good. Also, I did Dr. Pepper with chocolate ice cream once, which was quite tasty.

Picked up 3 pints for under $15 last weekend. Would have done 4 but when I did that last year I ended up in the hospital for "gas" (Cardiologist has a different opinion, the punk kid!). My hospital room was ground level. Across the way, the sign on a Graeter's shop mocked me for 4 days.

Was that after the Not Your Father's Root Beer, or did they have that status before and now it's "my favorite daughter favorite fiancee?" And, if that's your daughter's favorite bf, how many does she have??? :~ Marc

Never had Moxie. Sounds delightful. thinking about things I liked as a kid, some stayed with me (Slim Jims) some not so much (Boston Baked Beans and red "licorice"),

Well, to the best of my knowledge, the only reason I ever drank Moxie was because of Mad Magazine. :p Twizzlers are...strange. I think the play with the formula, or maybe they're made in different plants with different recipes. Sometimes they taste the way they did when I was kid, sometimes they're overly "plastic". But I tend more toward the chocolate ones than the red ones.
