As Griff pointed out, a lot of it has to do with permissions to vote articles up/down, etc. Personnaly, I come here to help people, get help, and troll the lounge. The whole notion of "reputation" translate into "what do people think of me", and is really an artificially inflated sense of self worth that has no real bearing on your skills or abilities.

If it's not broken, fix it until it is

That sounds like mature wisdom you speak, and we have no place for that kind of talk here!

Every 100,000 points, Sean comes round with a rather *interesting* gift. My advice is not to get 100,000 points.

Reputation ranking is several things. In the context of the question I think you are asking, it is a system for measuring credibility on the website. Serious answers or statements (ie. not jokes) from those with a high reputation should be considered worth more than someone with a lower rep value. It is also an RPG where the winner gets ... umm, nothing.

The reputation system on the Lounge is a cross between the concept involved in the Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour" Album and a video-game where you win by helping yourself (to more points) as well as, hopefully, teaching others :) The game, itself, is influenced by the wisdom teachings of Ahura-Mazda (aka Manicheanism): i.e., it is a war-zone where a cosmic struggle is played out between the forces of Light and Dark, Yin and Yang, Vanilla and Chocolate, Groovy and Bummer, Ego and Id, Self-Aggrandizement and Altruistic Empathy. The usual Angels and Demons are included at no extra charge. cheers, Bill

I'm a really, really old member of codeproject, and as far as I know, the only use for the reputation system I can see is to keep the rectocranially-inverted members involved and entertained. As I'm sure you know, technocrats rarely score with members of the opposite (or, perhaps more politically correct, female) gender, so scoring points on a website has some trading value in dork circles. You can't trade reputation points for pizza or beer, so they're meaningless to me.
