I obtained my passport 8 or 9 years ago. It expires next year. Which is smarter ? - Renew now while there's lots of time - Renew when the time is up

Not sure about US but here it is harder to renew an expired passport. Better to get it done early.

There are some countries that won't let you in if your passport is due to expire in the next few months. Better to renew early if there is any chance you'll need it near the end.

Contrary to popular belief, nobody owes you anything.

If it is the US, renew it before it expires. Usually takes less time and last I checked a renewal costs less than a new application.

IMO, renew it when you need it. Mine expired years ago, and I never renewed it, and have no intention of doing so.

Most countries require your passport to be valid for 6 months before they let you in. Get the passport renewed at least 3 months in advance just for any contingencies. The US doesn't add unexpired time to the new passport. By the way, all passport applications at overseas US consulates and embassies could not be processed after May 26. The situation may have been resolved by now.

Depends, if you're crossing the border... in some countries (like turkey) your passport needs to be valid for atleast 1 year upon entering the country (as a foreigner).

Need to do mine, too, as it expires next month. But the damn photo keeps coming out looking like me.
