Windows 10 is about to release and it looks promising to me. What about you? Would you upgrate to Windows 10???
The forced updates are probably the last straw. Until now, I've stayed with Windows to be compatible with family, etc. The time to call that quits is near at hand. Most of my primary applications are available in Linux, anyway. It's my elephanting computer.

Point it to a WSUS server and be done with it. After years of procrastinating, a few months ago I finally took the time to set up a WSUS server in a small VM to see what it can do. Pretty happy with the results so far.

I had to look up WSUS. It's just another trip down the same tubes - and it won't help anyone that I'd be expected to service (i.e., various family). Like I did with cable TV (with extreme satisfaction with the outcome, as is my Mrs.), it'll be the final push to cut-the-MS cord. Most users have now experienced other O/S's, anyway, so they'll be more willing to adapt than years ago. It's time to stop dodging the bullets by simply getting out of the line of fire.

Just curious, what are the problems you're seeing? I was planning on upgrading straight away (I use a Mac most of the time, but have a Windows 8.1 machine for development).
How do you know so much about swallows? Well, you have to know these things when you're a king, you know.

Interestingly, ca. 2 weeks ago I got my Mrs. a new laptop (Win7 Pro); Validating the windows version and it downloaded (without asking) the Updates. Screwed it up super royally. Wouldn't start. Finally, I gave up and had to reload from the image partition. And this time around I installed everything without the benefit of the update - smooth as silk. Hours of life wasted.

In a case like this, I'd be more likely to suspect incompatibilities with preloaded 3rd-party crapware.

Third Party Crapware? Actually, considering what was on the system at the time (virtually empty), and what was not loaded later - the missing application from the reload was Office 365 "trial". I guess you got it almost right - just apply the changes I did, above, to your thinking and everything will make more sense.

Where? A Refurb from NewEgg. The bloatware was MS Office365. I actually bought a DELL M6500 from ThinkGreenPC (for me) and it had zero bloatware out of the box. The reload partion didn't bother with the Office365 - so if you need to go by what changed in the system the finger's easily pointed. Experience w/MS screwing other peoples apps with upgrades, include major apps like ZoneAlarm, are legion. Not to mention that an unrequested upgrade could leave your system in a "Do Not Turn Off" state for ridiculously long periods of time. Perish the thought that it's a laptop and your battery is too low and you don't have a charger (or outlet), etc. The really mysterious part is how you'd not be aware of the well know phenomenon of doing a MS upgrade and thereby trashing your system. It's been going on since DOS 6.0.

Systems can get trashed no matter what OS is running, I wouldn't single out MS. Mind you, I've steered clear of Office 365, maybe it would be giving me grief just the same. But you'd think if there were widespread problems on pristine installs, it'd be fixed by now. It's been at least 3 years now I've run nothing but VMs here at home. With all hardware virtualized and no crappy driver to get in the way, I've yet to have to rebuild a single one of them (and that's including moving all VMs from one physical host to another--twice...and then changing the host OS in-between).
