Comes from musical directions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamics_(music)[^] "pp" in musical notation stands for "pianissimo" or "very soft" - "p" stands for "piano" or "soft"

pp - very quiet p - quiet mf - moderately loud f - loud ff - very loud Which leads us to an additional puzzle of the day since the clue was solved so quickly. How many words can you name which contain the letter sequence 'mf' (without consulting OneLook or similar word search site!) There's a surprising number!

Does "hamfisted" qualify or should there be a hyphen? :)
