(Until the next time, that is!) So, yesterday, my boss came up with a brilliant idea. Out of the blue... "Why don't we all go out after work and grab a beer?" Yeah, why not? I guess I must have gotten a tiny bit Tired and Emotional[^] because I forgot my jacket - with all of my keys in it - at the steakhouse we went to. When I discovered it, They were closed of course! That was the first mistake from which all of the rest stems. :-( So I took the tube home. When I got home, I rang the doorbell, because as I said, the keys were in the jacket I didn't have. And guess what? The wife had taken the opportunity now that I was gone to ALSO get a little tired and emotional[^] (When the cat is out...). So she was fast asleep and didn't hear me knocking and ringing. So I had to sleep outside on the cold stone staircase for SEVEN hours until I could finally get her out of bed! While I got ready for work, she left for her job - until I remembered that I didn't have any keys, so I couldn't leave for work because I couldn't have locked the door after me... So the wife had to get off her train and take another train back to lock up after me. When I had gone, I discovered that I had forgotten the spare car key (car was left at work yesterday), so I had to go back and get that. Luckily, the wife was still at home so she could lock up after me - again! When I came to my bus stop, the bus didn't arrive AT ALL (quite rare here in Sweden), and I had to wait for 20 minutes for the next bus, which luckily did arrive, almost on time. But the bus stop outside my work had apparently been removed, so I had to continue to the NEXT stop and walk back - In the rain! With no jacket! And no umbrella! So much for my bloody awful night and morning. Now I'm at work, eagerly awaiting the end of the day when I can go into town to get my jacket - and keys - from the steakhouse where it hopefully still resides.... And I don't feel all that well to be honest. But hey, at least I got to work. Two of my collegues are "working at home" today, and the boss hasn't shown up either... I'll never drink again! Getting Tired and Emotional in Sweden? That must have cost a fortune! Was the boss buying? Cheers!

Well, good on you! I was in Denmark in 1999 visiting a customer and we went out to eat and have a couple of beers. I don't remember an exact amount, but I could have gotten "Tired and Emotional" for a whole weekend here in Germany. These prices were stupendous! [Edit] I reckon Sweden, Finland and Norway also have astronomical prices or should I say taxes on alcohol.[/Edit] Cheers!

In the UK, if someone makes that gesture after a night on the sauce, it's usually a prelude to a bout of fisticuffs.

Yeah it's something we always say to tell someone we expect him to get it done or it gets well, wish him luck. It's very common in Germany, i'd say it is the equivalent to crossing fingers (on a language base) :) But in German crossing fingers sounds kinda dumb ("Ich kreuze die Finger für dich") and is understod as betrayl if done behind the back or if directly shown kinda like we are so good friends (inseparable)!

In England crossing your fingers behind your back means you can tell a lie and not suffer any consequences - e.g. "You said you would take me shopping today!" - "I had my fingers crossed!"

I worked with my brother on a short contract job in Stockholm back in 1984 - he had been there for three years but, having absolutely no language skills, had only managed to learn two or three words of Swedish! I had my handy phrasebook so we tried to go a pick up a couple of girls at the local nightclub. We spotted a couple of likely candidates and I tried to chat them up using my phrasebook and a few phrases taught to me by my work colleagues. Nothing was getting through until one of them volunteered that she spoke a little English (very little). I found out that they weren't Swedish at all but were Finnish tourists on a drinking holiday! Apparently, despite the high prices in Sweden, it was a lot cheaper than drinking in Finland so all they wanted to do was get drunk and then go back to their hotel alone and sleep it off until the next day. They had done this every day of their vacation so far. They did actually invite me to go to their hotel with them but I would have to leave my brother behind as he was "lean rumour", or something like, that which is apparently Finnish for "too ugly"! I would have had no problem abandoning my ugly brother for two beautiful girls but they were both already hardly able to walk so I did the gentlemanly thing and declined the offer.

                    - I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.
