I wonder who all this stuff is written for. Recently I walked into a garage and on being greeted I said "I would like to buy a car" - the receptionist looked at me surprised and got a salesman. I repeated the same to him and again he seemed pleasantly surprised by my lack of BS. Anyway two hours later, which seemed much too long to me (15 minutes top is what I would expect), I walked out having bought a new car with the salesman commenting on "how fast" the sale was. Some of us just know what we want and don't want an 'experience' when we are buying something - I wonder if neolithic hunters wanted an 'experience' when they were trying to catch a rabbit for their lunch. rant rant rant...

Slightly OT, but related to car buying you have the inverse problem, the 'no haggle' sales model. Sure it is supposed to save you money/time/stress but in the end are you really sure? Case in point, the Scion FRS, the Subaru BRZ, and the Toyota GT86 (which isn't available in the states), all of them are the same car* with different logos slapped on. My wife wanted a new car and settled on that being the model she wanted. Went to Subaru, got the specs and price. Then went to Scion, which is no haggle**. loaded it how she wanted it and got the price. In the end it was the same as Subaru. So we went back to Subaru and she haggles. End up getting them to knock $5k off the price and get a longer warranty out of the deal. That was before the trade-in. Sure, it took us about 5 more hours and a week longer to get the car... but I would say that is worth $1000/hr. *They are slightly different to start with but you can customize the Scion to closely match the Subaru, albeit slightly softer suspension. **Scion is so no haggle that the sales manager there informed us they can lose the ability to sell the brand if they are caught haggling.

I did haggle but did not get a great deal - I need a car and time more than I can afford to walk away and try garages in different cities.

Toronto airport gates B and C, looks good. Every thing is a restaurant, each seat or table, an iPad and payment terminal; Sushi, café, bars, vast. Sit down and try to order a wine, no drinks menu is displayed when I select 'buy drinks'. So I lean over and try the neighbouring one. That dinks menu hasn't got any wine on it. 'Just give me a glass of wine will you and forget this technology crap' I say to the guy behind the bar. Technology, if only it worked.... Oh, and the BA app to download your boarding pass isn't compatible with one of the most popular phones on the market, the Samsung Galaxy. Typical. No wonder I actually hate computers, or mores specifically the morons who write code for them.

To keep kids from ordering drinks, perhaps?

I bought a new car this last weekend. It was a used car I had test-driven on Thursday, thought about, researched features, reviews, etc. and then decided to back in on Saturday and buy it. I walked in, asked for the salesman who had given me the test drive and told him I will buy that car, pointing to it in the showroom where it had just been brought in from outside to be the manager's special of the week. It took four hours but I got what I wanted for my trade in, $500 knocked off the price and a two-year engine guarantee for free (instead of the $2000 originally quoted) along with free oil changes, tire rotations, car wash, etc. also free for two years as long as I take it there for regular servicing - which I was planning on doing anyway. I also got a full tank of petrol which the salesman said he would throw in. He whined a little about that when he found out as he was filling it up at a nearby gas station that the vehicle had an almost empty 26.4 gallon tank and took premium! By the way, it was a grey 2009 Volkwagen Touareg 2 for those that need to know that sort of thing. I love it! I have named it "Panzer" since it is big, grey, very solid and heavy (nearly 3 tons) and German!

          - I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.

Reading that reminded me of when I bought my watch. I had, for a long time, wanted a standard stainless steel Rolex Oyster. I got a small windfall and so, £1,500 burning a hole in my best trousers, went to the shop. My request was simple, "I would like the Stainless Steel Oyster with the faux-Pearl face and President bracelet that you have in the window."; price as stated. It took me two bloody hours to buy the watch! They just would not believe that I could walk in and just ask that one. The fact I'd wanted one for, probably, 20 years was missed by one and all. It is now more than 20 years since the transaction and I am still haunted by the stupidity of it all - 10 minutes and they could have earned all that bloody commision!

You can't know how many times I repeated that sentence this morning: first day of work after a straight month of vacation and... the train has been cancelled, 1 full hour late at work with a month of accumulated sunshine-storms. Blasphemy in Italy is ill-considered but well practiced :D

Nope, kernel engineer on Windows and Linux. Drivers, protocol stuff, low level comms, that kind of thing.

                                        Nice.

Yep. Not only is it fucking hard core and difficult, the technology doesn't change every 2 years. That makes it constant, something you can build on. Not like COM, Cobra, SOAP, Java, .Net and all that crap. For me its just C, the unchanging kernel API, and known, and very old protocols. :)
