Last weekend I took the leap and updated my Windows 7 Pro Lenovo to Windows 10 Pro. I'm quite happy with what I see, but that isn't much - nothing like the merciless fall from 7 to 8.1, but some things aren't quite right. Sometimes when I start up, the start menu just doesn't work, not just the Windows Key search, but clicking the start menu icon does nothing. Then, after a restart, all is well, for an indefinite number of restarts later. My PC is a few years old and I have never formatted and cleaned up or anything, because I've never had enough trouble, but now I am tempted; I now have a separate Dell laptop from work I can use to back up my Lenovo files and stuff, but I would still rather not have to do that until I fit a second hard drive to my laptop and the process will be easy-peasy. Does anyone know of any good diagnostics tools that are suitable for, or targeted at, pre-Ten machines that have been upgraded? Even a pre-Ten tool that could help me clean up about four years of really diverse and miscellaneous crap.

That is the beauty of XAML, fast, isn't it? :-) There is a Windows.old folder, comprising of more than 30GB in size, use the Disk cleanup, it will help you clean up the disk and make your system a little faster. I won't say it would be great and back in the same place, but it may make it better. :-)

I suspect that it is not diagnostic tools but a little patience that you require. Periodically the system needs to do a full start-up to keep the quick start-up properly calibrated. Attempt to do something before this is fully complete and you have a potential lock up as you've experienced. Personally I've never understood this desperate need to get boot time world records but apparently everybody else just can't switch a computer on and take in the beauty of the sky for a minute before plunging into action. Consider this at least a degree of reaping what you sow!

Me and my colleagues get that sometimes too. I guess opening up that start window must read a lot of data and render a lot of objects due to the new tile portion.

Well, since I can't get Sonar to even open a simple MIDI file, Win10 is being removed. Again. Damn Watchdog error, even after a clean install of everything. No errors in the Event logs. No nuffin'. Works fine in 7. Even works fine in 8.1, but not 10. But I'll try again in a couple months because I do like the rest of 10. Mostly.
