I've got two four port hubs and 3 ports on the laptop, making for: 1. keyboard (laptop keyboard is not for high speed typing) 2. mouse 3. laptop USB 1 to DVI converter for 3rd monitor 4. 512GB external SSD 5. printer 6. laptop USB 2 to hub 7. laptop USB 3 to hub 8. powering crappy speakers 9. credit card reader 10. ID scanner 11. Verifone pinpad Item 9-11 are related to my current job (writing ATM software) Marc

I have two on front-panel and four on back-panel on my desktop (no laptop for myself - it is for my wife)... Occasionally I connect my phone to charge it via the computer (when I want it to be close to me while working)... All my keyboard/mouse/printer are wireless... No credit cards to read... The speakers are powered from the wall... No external drives... However - this week I started to work on an Arduino based project and it takes an USB port to work on it...
Skipper: We'll fix it. Alex: Fix it? How you gonna fix this? Skipper: Grit, spit and a whole lotta duct tape.

I'm surprised you don't consider yourself safe enough to put on the 'safe list' I keep hearing about.
I just don't trust myself. It's those shifty eyes. I'm sure I'm hiding something.

At work:
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Third monitor.
- I also charge my Mio Link when it needs it.
At home:
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Three external hard drives, one of which acts as a NAS.
- Printer
- Bluetooth dongle
- Camera (one of those that sits atop the monitor)
- UPS
- A remote control for Windows Media Player
- Xbox 360 controller
- Joystick/throttle or steering wheel, depending on the game
- Pedals (yes, I have two sets or those as well, one for driving and one for flying)
- iPhone/iPad
9 and up are not plugged in all the time, though one of (9 or (10 and 11)) is generally plugged in at any given time.

Would it be as fast as an internal SSD?
Like many question, the answer is 42 it depends. most internal SSDs use eSATA and external SSDs use USB, but not all interfaces are created equal. For starters there is a difference between USB2 and USB3 throughputs. In many cases USB3 (external) will be faster than eSATA ( assuming head-to-head comparison ), but USB3 will be dependent on how may other devices are connected. In general, for low - mid data access you won't see much difference between internal and external SSDs but for heavy data access internal has slight advantage. These sources are bit outdated, but the point is still valid http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2413310,00.asp[^] and http://www.itworld.com/article/2693284/usb-3-0-vs-esata-is-faster-better.html[^]
Yusuf May I help you?
I'm pretty sure that very few internal SSDs use e(xternal)SATA. As for USB3, it still uses 8/10bit encoding; meaning that 5 gigabits/sec translates to 500MB/sec max. Good SATA SSDs will send data faster than that in sequential reads. USB 3.1's speed doubling could push an external drive over the top; but only if it's a PCIe model internally.

On what layer you are writing code for? Driver ? CEN-XFS type or Application level?

USB3 is theoretically in the same speed class as sata, so it could be as fast as an internal (non-PCIe) SSD; with 3.1 being comparable to 2 PCIe 2.0 lanes. In practice, even devices marketed as USB SSDs generally are 4 flash chip models (laptop or budget desktop equivalent) not 8 chips like higher end desktop SSDs and fall short of high end models. Ones marketed as just high capacity flash drives generally have only 1 flash chip and a crappy controller and are much slower. Cheap USB3 flash drives use bottom binned flash and crappier controllers and make the former look good. USB2 is slow enough that all flash drives will suck similarly.

I have a few Dell Precision M6600s with DUAL SSDs, internal. I have a USB3/eSATA External Device (BlacX) that I use for Cloning drives. I can tell you that eSATA out performs the USB3 consistently enough that I use it. Probably 10% faster. With USB2, I would put destination and source INSIDE the machine, because it was so much faster for both devices to be on the SATA bus. Finally, if you are running SSDs, please check for firmware updates! We had a Crucial drive failing because we logged more than 5,000hrs on it, and they had some bad code in the firmware. I even put a spare SSD in my TiVo to see how the continuous writing is handled. 2yrs, still going, but I am ready to take it out and clone it for safety :-)

Check the smart levels if you're concerned; but consumer SSDs are still generally good for a write/day for several years even though the warranty max TB written number is much lower (mainly to pressure enterprise customers to buy higher margin products).

1 Dymo Dual label printer (return address labels one side, postal stamps the other) 2 Seiko label printer (shipping labels) 3 - 6 150 CD/DVD disc carousels (love these, saves me hours of digging through piles of discs) 7 - Dymo scale (can weigh packages up to 5 pounds for automatic postage calculations) 8 - Nostromo N52 gaming keypad 9 - Logitech wireless mouse 10 - Microsoft HD webcam 11 and beyond, USB 5.25" drive enclosures (IDE and SATA) I had 8+ with 250 GB drives, 2+ with 500 GB, and 1 TB workbook, not to mention thumbdrives. Not that I have all the drives plugged in at once, but if I am doing video editing, I may have a fair number of them up and running. I have a Ziotek 13 port hub that I fill on occasion and an 8 port hub as well. Printers (LaserJet and InkJet) used to be USB, but now they are network connected.

Yeah, I should have, but the funny thing is, everyone except you has actually enumerated their devices! ;) Marc

It's like a test, read the question, answer correctly. Ask for a number, get an array of strings returned. Makes sense in a computer forum kind of way. Can I get a "BAAAA-AAA" from everyone?

I sometimes use a wireless keyboard/ mouse receiver and a 32 GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive, but not very often. Backups are still being set up as I don't have my server working on our new network yet. I am having issues getting it connected, as Windows states that the router is invalid. Annoying as he-double-toothpicks.
What do you get when you cross a joke with a rhetorical question? The metaphorical solid rear-end expulsions have impacted the metaphorical motorized bladed rotating air movement mechanism. Do questions with multiple question marks annoy you???

Hey Nish, how are you doing ? Yup, it's been months. I've been away for a while, got busy with new assignments at work and it feels good to spend some time with the base-mothership (CP) talking to very old/New mates here. Just for a change! And please say hello to Rohan :)
