Do you hide extensions of known types?

Same with me, how can you associate an application if you don't know extension? i know this is a Fringe case but none the less.

First I show extensions, then I hide the waste of space "Type" column, then I change the column order to show size before time-stamp, then I sort by time-stamp descending so that the most recent files are at the top then I set that standard to all directories on all disks. Done.

Another alternative is to skip Explorer. I moved to Total Commander ages ago and never looked back.

Agreed - unfortunately, I have to help setup up lots of computers for my client when we do an install, so I have to deal with Explorer. Marc

I used to rename lots of MP3 files (they HAD to be in a correct format or my brain couldn't cope ;p) and then I preferred no extensions, as renaming is a lot easier when not worrying about extensions. I never really needed extensions anyway, so I always had that option on. Then I became a developer and turned it on after about a week. Extensions are so much more important when you're actually doing work...

The default settings are not made for programmers - they're outnumbered. If an "office" user could see the extension along with the file name, he could easily change both. His document is "lost" because the system can no longer associate a program. He will call for help... :doh: (I do change the settings on my own computer).

Like you, I almost always disable that "feature". As a programmer I think it's important to know exactly what types of files you're dealing with, if indeed they actually have a file extension. Not sure about the history of this so-called feature, but I think it dates back to the days of Windows 95 when Uncle Bill (as I like to sarcastically refer to Microsoft) wanted to make all PCs easily accessible for the relative no-nothing user. It's not Microsoft's most annoying feature, but it's up there. Almost as irritating as the (thankfully) now defunct Microsoft Office Assistant, which in my view was a contradiction in terms on a global scale.

not just tell me the extensions. But tell me where the hidden files are. Oh and the system files. YES I do want/NEED to know where they are. I have had some real issues in not knowing a file was where it was supposed to be. And yes I want the ext. I actually use text not the little icon picture over there. And furthermore I want a menu and I want windows 98 SE. That last was almost a truth. The first part was certainly true.

Same thing. It's normally one of the first things I change (even on other people's computer if they ask me to fix something ;) ) I really don't understand why hiding extensions is the default...

It lets them focus instead on the pleasant and descriptive "Type" column. Reducing the amount of information is all touchy feely. Me, I've always been too much of a control freak. I don't like hidden things. Causes stress. :)

Ah... that helps explains why, when opening files, they offer the option to "Always perform this action when handling files of this type" It would be a shame if I cut the life short of a malicious executable. All lives matter! :)
