Ad blocker for Edge browser

I hope that this is the correct forum; if not, please direct me to the right one. Please could someone advise on a good Ad Blocker for the Edge browser. I am reluctant to download one at random from the web as it is nigh on impossible to decide if they are any good or if they are malware. I have trust in CPians to give honest unbiased suggestions. Please do not respond by saying "Ditch Edge and get FireFox / Chrome / IE6 :rolleyes: / Opera". Thanks

AFAIK, Edge doesn't support extensions at all yet, so anything that claims to be an ad-blocker for Edge is almost certainly lying.

If you really want a browser with an edge, don't use Edge. Or any browser Microsoft ever produced. And stay away from their search engines also. They haven't been very good with OS'es either lately. :~

You don't need a specific ad blocker... just take a look at this link[^] where a tuned hosts file for your OS will do the same for all the browsers you have. I've been using it for years and it is really sweet. :cool: Hope this helps.

Just use your hosts file to redirect ad site links to localhost. There's a web site that provides an updated hosts file, I forget the name. In any case, that's how I do it.

You don't need a specific ad blocker... just take a look at this link[^] where a tuned hosts file for your OS will do the same for all the browsers you have. I've been using it for years and it is really sweet. :cool: Hope this helps.

If you're only thinking in terms of domain blocking, you're vastly underestimating the capabilities of a modern content blocker. Blocking on html elements lets you get rid of all sorts of useless crap that comes from the same domain (and even part of the same html file) as the page you're intentionally loading.

I know an ad blocker is more powerful. Yet for the websites I visit the most, there's not much of a difference between Edge (hosts file only) and Firefox (with ad blocker). The obvious one is the visible navigation error pages where the ad normally goes, but I can live with that. In fact, if I open a specific website in Firefox and it detects I'm using an ad blocker, it switches to some kind of inline CSS advertising that I have to block manually. In Edge, all I get is the navigation error in a small frame.

I recommend blocking with a hosts file (others provided the link) and manually add to it if you find sites with annoying ads. It seems Edge is not quite ready with the extensions. You have to ignore all the IE haters, as someone that developed websites back in the non-standards days of IE vs Netscape and had Windows 95 crash and lose my homework - I had my issues with MS but now I use Bing more than Google and IE11 as my main browser and it's great, plus I have a surface book on order - whoop! MS is doing well but for some reason people still think it's 2005 and cool to hate them?? Meh. Ignore the trolls.

I also recommend blocking the with a hosts file (others provided a link) and manually adding to it as you find annoying ads on your favorite sites. Also look into Disconnect. It seems Edge is not quite ready with the extensions but when they are available add that and layer the blocking! That has done the trick nicely. Pages load much faster. I had one minor issue with a site that I needed to access being blocked, so I have written a little batch file to merge my own hosts file (that contains my home network) with the MVP one and to incorporate a temporary overrides file as well. Just in case it might be of use to anyone else, I've copied it below.
