am I the only guy annoyed with Microsoft?
-
I have never understood hatred towards Microsoft. They don't create perfect software but not only have they have always made the best software they also make it the easiest to build on top of their software and improve it. There is no one that even comes close to being as good as Microsoft. Many of us have had good paying careers because of what Microsoft does. If you are this upset at using Microsoft products, you might just kill yourself using someone else's products. :^)
There are only 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Simple; in the early days of DOS there were few remarks; but when Win3.1 hit the market, every hobbyist could look like a pro by nodding wisely at a failing system and sighing "Microsoft", like the sages they were.

Yup. Dominated the market for years. They defined design into things I can understand, even UI-design - focussing on things like repeatability, recognizability, usability and a lot of other ties. The "common controls" are the most used, that's saying a lot.

Things change; they always do. It is not the old Microsoft that favored developers, it is a new beast. We'll see how it goes, but I like the idea that it will become more interesting in the OS market than it has been for some time.

yeah, me too. I'm kinda rooting for Android. It's got a looooong ways to go to be a real desktop os, but I like the quality I'm seeing. If all the dang desktop linuxes could converge to ONE desktop linux, they might have a chance. But they kinda don't seem to be. (I don't even know. Haven't been keepin tabs on desktop linuxes.)

Where's the rage i expected to find in here? Doesn't anybody have a grandma that they've had to help through this win10 SP1 thing? Yes grandma. Start / Power / Restart, then wait 45 minutes. It will finally work again. No. It'll be no better than before. But it will work again. At least windows explorer remembers where you f***-ing put it. Is there anything else in this damn service pack??? Doesn't this win10 stuff ANGER anybody besides me??? I mean, wtf??? The old control panel isn't gone, but there IS a huge new one to wade through. And it's dog slow. Full of thrilling ........ animations. And the start menu is back. But it's now DOG slow. Are there any good parts to windows 10? At all? I mean, isn't this exactly how you're NOT supposed to deliver software? Does Microsoft feel no shame? wtf?
Eh... I give much simpler instructions. "See that thingy that's asking you to upgrade to Windows 10? Click the button. Follow the instructions, then go watch TV for a couple hours. When you get back, it'll probably be ready for you to follow a few more instructions, and you're done." Honestly, as operating system upgrades go, this is about the smoothest one I've ever seen. Had a couple minor annoyances right after the install, but 95% of things just worked exactly as before. It starts up faster, it never BSODs (I was getting those 2-3 times a week before I upgraded - Probably a corrupted driver somewhere), and it does all of that tedious upgrading while I'm at the office, instead of whining at me to reboot when I'm in the middle of a game. It's not perfect, but it's an improvement... And it was free.
Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

Author of the Guardians Saga (Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels)sooooo you don't mind that loads of the people who use your software have had to wade through win8, 8sp1, win10, 10sp1 ?? sorry customer. sucks to be you. 10SP1 isn't as broken as win10, it's install didn't blow up for me, and it was free. wheeeeeere is the rage i expected ?? We are on WINDOWS 10 SP1 !!

works fine, eh? so it doesn't bother you that you've had to wait 2 hours for win10 and SP1 to install? Restart your pc and boom - it's gone for 45 minutes no warning. That doesn't bother you? and you've got an os that's basically win7 plus bloat plus a windows update that's a lot bumpier? I don't know about you, but I'm getting worried about microsoft. This was supposed to be the GOOD one of the every other release cycle. Seriously, has the emperor decided he likes his new "clothes" ??? Do we have to go looking for an emperor that isn't fricken insane? I am pretty p***ed... This is not how the company that builds my OS should be.

It bothers me more when relatives get their pre-10 machines still get owned by some malware through some security vulnerability that was patched months ago, because they never applied the patch. And then I'm left cleaning the mess. Consumers have proven time and again they can't be trusted to keep their systems up to date. So I'd rather see grandma have to wait for forced updates to get installed before she can get to her cat videos, than seeing her system never getting patched at all.

Agreed. At least about the "there's nothing better" part. But so far win7 is better than everything after it. Microsoft has since delivered win8, win8 SP1, win10, win10 SP1. That's =4= major releases that are no better than win7. It makes me think Microsoft no longer knows what it's doing. If you put out 4 releases of YOUR software, would you want that same track record? That's shameful. I'm pretty sure they deserve my rage.

We must not be reading the same articles, because all I keep reading about is how badly vulnerable Android is, and there's no clean solution because its users are at the mercy of their carriers. Also, desktop OS? I've seen the x86 Android emulators, but I'm guessing you're talking about something else entirely...?

ha ha :) I hear that. but you knoooooow gramma is gonna see that big update circle with the 10% and think to herself "where are my cat videos? I see that it says don't turn off your PC, but I really want to see those cat videos. I bet if I turned it off and on again it'll start working." FORCE POWER DOWN... Steeeeeeve? Yeah, hi, it's gramma. My computer doesn't work, can you come help me, please? I don't think win10 or any OS ever will everrrr solve the gramma problem :)

You're not seeing quality in the Android code base? I am. And in their docs. Quality. As for the updates, my Nexus10 is receiving patch updates. I'm not talking major OS or service pack updates, either - patch updates WITH release notes that specifically say it is a security update only. Yeah, microsoft, i see no release notes from you. My at&t phone may not ever see those updates thanks to, well, at&t. But google is putting them out. And they wouldn't be doing that if they weren't planning on fixing the situation they're in now. I'm definitely not talking about x86 android emulators - those are TERRIBLE. You're way better off testing on a real device. I'm hoping to see the quality of the android code base expand to handle a real tablet PC that you can hook 2 monitors and 2 usb hubs to. Which, of course, is a loooong ways from reality. But I'd like to see it. I'd dump windows immediately, because so would the grammas who can't afford apple.

uhhh, I'm a victim because.....?? I am gettin by just fine on win10. I read. But my customers aren't computer programmers...

I'm considering linux, but what about the grandmas that use the computer program I wrote for windows? It's them I'm concerned about.

These are the bastards that "deprecated" Silverlight, never to be forgiven, never to be forgotten. And now they (and the rest of the industry) inflict the current web stack on us, what a dabacle. I will give them some kudos for VS, Windows 10 (upgraded easily and simply) but they lose a LOT for their "telemetry" crap they distributing.
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity RAH

OT - really enjoyed reading your bio on your website. How did you remember all that stuff? I can't recall what happened three days ago; but I was born 20 years before you. And, incidentally, passed through Seattle (courtesy of Merchant Marine) the year you were born.
