Where's the rage i expected to find in here? Doesn't anybody have a grandma that they've had to help through this win10 SP1 thing? Yes grandma. Start / Power / Restart, then wait 45 minutes. It will finally work again. No. It'll be no better than before. But it will work again. At least windows explorer remembers where you f***-ing put it. Is there anything else in this damn service pack??? Doesn't this win10 stuff ANGER anybody besides me??? I mean, wtf??? The old control panel isn't gone, but there IS a huge new one to wade through. And it's dog slow. Full of thrilling ........ animations. And the start menu is back. But it's now DOG slow. Are there any good parts to windows 10? At all? I mean, isn't this exactly how you're NOT supposed to deliver software? Does Microsoft feel no shame? wtf?

I too share your pain. Recently I bought a Chromebook. It is refreshing to experience once again how a computer is supposed to work. Seniors, in particular, should be spared the suffering of using an OS requiring such relentless doses of updates as Windows does. If all they need to do is browse the internet, why should they be bothered with useless eye-candy desktop widgets? Simplicity is a requirement for efficiency.

OT - really enjoyed reading your bio on your website. How did you remember all that stuff? I can't recall what happened three days ago; but I was born 20 years before you. And, incidentally, passed through Seattle (courtesy of Merchant Marine) the year you were born.

I have not had to wait 2 hours for any Windows 10 installations or updates. Maybe it's just you.

Technically, they skipped one, so it also might be they skipped the good one. Wrong move Microsoft.

The irony of your statement is that the Surface Pro is already there, and has been there for a number of years now. I've used mine as my primary computer, hooked up to a USB hub that let me connect 3 monitors to it, plus my mouse, keyboard, and all other standard USB devices. The only reason I'm no longer using it in that fashion is that I've seen upgrade to 4K, which my first-gen Surface Pro can't do. How much longer are you willing to wait for this to be reality with Android?

Well, yeah, I've got a 2-in-1 laptop, too (a lot cheaper). It's got my 60" tv and a portrait monitor and 2 USB hubs with 4 midi devices, 2 wireless keyboards n a mouse, midi adapter, and external drive on it. It screams and I'm not goin back to desktops. But I wouuuuuuld like to have an alternative OS that'll do that that can make microsoft jump again. An OS popular enough that grandmas will use it. I can wait another 10 years for Android to get there. But when it does, I'll look forward to closing my windows. I mean, why are we ok with win8 coming out. LAME. win8 SP1 comes out. LAME. win10 comes out. LAME. Now we're on SP1 which is SUPPOSED to be non lame BY DEFINITION... lame lame lame LAAAME !![^] I, for one, think Microsoft deserves some shame for 4 major releases that get us nowhere better than win7

works fine, eh? so it doesn't bother you that you've had to wait 2 hours for win10 and SP1 to install? Restart your pc and boom - it's gone for 45 minutes no warning. That doesn't bother you? and you've got an os that's basically win7 plus bloat plus a windows update that's a lot bumpier? I don't know about you, but I'm getting worried about microsoft. This was supposed to be the GOOD one of the every other release cycle. Seriously, has the emperor decided he likes his new "clothes" ??? Do we have to go looking for an emperor that isn't fricken insane? I am pretty p***ed... This is not how the company that builds my OS should be.

Yeah, it takes 45 minutes. But I got to keep working while it downloaded. I didn't have to go to the store and buy a disk. It updated without need for interaction, so I did some housecleaning while it updated. I mean jeez, what do you want for free? Do I wish the update downloaded invisibly and updated instantaneously? Sure. Am I angry that I don't get magical wishes? Not so much.

I like Windows 10 just fine. However, it has the same just slightly flakey feel as a Linux distro. Stuff doesn't always work just right. I think Microsoft may be telling us there is no longer any difference between Windows and Linux. I think they'll eventually be sorry they did that.

Not sure I agree with the Chromebook part. But yeah. So much needless suffering on end users' parts. Microsoft's brand is being tarnished. And Microsoft is the one doing the tarnishing. If they'd not released 8-10 to the public, and just went from 7 to 10 SP1, well, that probably would have been smart. I, being a computer programmer, felt I should suffer through it. If my users were gonna, I should. I didn't suffer cuz I'm a dang computer programmer. But why so much needless suffering for the grandmas out there. People have bought new computers to find out they can't even use them. You can't just tell your customers oh, 8 was beta. oh 8 SP1 was beta. oh 10 was beta. oh 10 SP1 might be beta. We'll let you know...

I haven't been assimilated into win10 yet. I feel your pain. Even with win8.1, I curse the guy that came up with metro tiles. It may look fine on a 10" screen, but I mean when you have a single 55" 4k for monitor, it looks horrible.

well, i do recommend gettin onto 10 rather than stay on 8. 10 may not beat 7, but it beats 8 hands down. and yeah the dude that ok'd win8 going out to the world should be shot. and the dudes that coded it? well, they have my sympathies. i mean, that code is headin to deprecated faster than zune software. i sure hope so at least. Does nobody remember Commodore? That c64 was king for a long time and the Amiga was beautiful. Why did you die like that Commodore? I miss you sooooo much. Oh the grief. Srsly.

"Are there any good parts to windows 10?" Sure, if you are MS or NSA or FBI or HLS. What? You didn't think all this was for your benefit, did you? They probably got more or will get from the Feds than regular licensing fees anyway.

I am multi OS user/programmer with the exception of Apple products (well I had iPhone at some point if it counts). I was using preview Win10 for testing and did not notice any advantages of this OS. Latest Win OS in use is Win 8(1) (desktop mode only) and I probably stop there unless Microsoft will come back to earth from the cloud. Besides, latest erratic moves from Microsoft are an open invitation for competition to come up with good consumer oriented OS. Let's wait for long overdue change.

i'd say so far that 7 > 10 > 8. if I were you, I'd either try to roll back to 7 or go to 10. But, of course, do what you want. you never named an os, though...

Conversation with my 92 year old mother: Mom: An icon on my desktop has a big red X on it. Me: Yes mom, it is telling you that the folder on another computer is not available. Mom: Can you fix it? Me: Try turning on the other computer. Mom: It still doesn't work. Me: Try remapping the remote folder. Mom: I have no idea how. This was done by my paid technician several months ago. Me: (Grumble, grumble) Ok Mom, give me a few minutes and I will remap it myself. Mom: Thanks son, I knew you could fix it.

i'd say so far that 7 > 10 > 8. if I were you, I'd either try to roll back to 7 or go to 10. But, of course, do what you want. you never named an os, though...

I have Win 7, 8, xp, Ubuntu, Fedora installed but no Win 10. I have checked 10. It is just 8 with new skin. Win 8 comes with emulators for GPU programming and is more useful in this regard. Win 10 has more background services running, uses my storage, bandwidth and CPU to conduct Microsoft business on unpredictable schedule. Therefore it is not even free. It is becoming more of an TV/advertisement box than computing workhorse. Because of that is not my preferred OS now. When they will provide solid, predictable OS then why not.

Yeah that makes sense. i don't support pre win7. I use linux at work (redhat), but that's just for boring webserver stuff. I've done a teeny bit of Android, but although the quality is there, it's got a long ways to go.
