I am considering buying a Mac, and I am wondering who out in CodeProject uses them, particularly for development (of any sort). Any reccomendations on what to get or avoid? Is the Apple warranty extension worth considering? Is getting a refurbished Mac worth it? My absolute max is ~1800. I want it for development purposes primarily, though my wife might actually learn to use for simple day to day stuff. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! I thought April Fool's Day was a couple days ago. Oh well, I guess fools linger on. :-D On a more serious note, WHY are you considering a Mac? I mean, come on, their OS X was the first operating system to finally implement true pre-emptive task switching. Everything prior to that was using cooperative task switching a la Windows 3.1. One more year and I get an upgrade. I primarily do multi-platform software on the Pc and Mac. I use Codewarrior 6.0 for development on the Mac and VC 6.0 on the PC. There isn't a good cross-platform development tool, although Metrowerks claims PowerPlant is headed in that direction...we'll see. I bought my wife a G4 a couple of years ago. She does graphic design. If I remember correctly it was on the order of $2500. Don't know anything about the refurbs. Don't know if my two cents have been any help, but good luck. You do know the Mac market share is shrinking and is now heading below 2%.

I also am considering a Mac for my home studio. I heard the G5s will come out by July or so. I'm thinking I'll probably wait until then. That way if I want top of the line it'll be at least a year before it's outdated. Or if I wanted a G4 the prices will drop. nay

With market share that small, doing any project for the Mac is questionable. (I've never liked the Mac much, but it's been a good counterpoint to Windows. I genuinely wish Apple would port OS X to the PC platform. It would give it new life and drive a stake through the heart of Linux on the desktop. It would also be cool if Apple added a Win32 compatiblity layer.)

I was going to be funny and post a picture of the type of mac you might wear in a rainstorm and comment on it being a bargain at only $25, but I have since concluded that my week away from the Internet has taken its toll as I was unable to find a single one. That and I really, really need to get out more. :~ Nothing to see here, just a man falling apart at the seems. Move along now...

BeOS? No? See why! Linux (or some other things like the BSDs) would live on and slowly fall into neglect when TCPA does no longer allow execution of SW not licensed by Microsoft or the music industry.

I have a powerbook that mostly gets used for office and I occasionally use the terminal for various linux/unix progs that have been ported over. The only real developement I have done was in java :~ And, for java, it wasn't bad... Though personally I wouldn't buy one for developement....
