To live, work or visit? Small 1 High street Town. Just off Portsea Island but probably still classed as Portsmouth by most. Reasonably nice area/houses in East Cosham, slums in West Cosham (Paulsgrove) where they had the Paedophille riots 10 years back.

Maybe work and if it looks good then move towards the area. I've looked and rightmove and, compared to Woking, property is very cheap, maybe as much as half what we'd pay here!

I've heard good things about them. The line of work they do sounds very interesting too. A friend of a friend had a 2nd interview recently (the 1st was a telephone interview) for a Project Manager job I think. The first question they asked her was 'Tell us about what we do'. She didn't have a clue and the interview was terminated there and then. I know your not going to make that mistake though.

Why are you raking up the past!!!! It's been 30+ years since I lived in Waterlooville. Going to Portsmouth was always a nightmare. Everything has been quietly laid to rest over those years and been forgotten. Now the nightmares will start again.

I got caught on something like that many moons ago; some time in the early 90's. since then I have made a point of knowing as much about a company as is possible from public sources including criticism.

The friend gives me a lift into work and it was somebody else at her agency that failed the interview. She was due to have an interview there also as we are getting rid of all our contractors at the end of next week but I think she's decided to put the job-hunting on ice till after Christmas now. I'll ask her Monday if she ever did go and pass on as much info as I can.

Cool, what was you doing in this neck of the woods? Agree with you about going into Portsmouth, I try to avoid it as much as I can.

I was working for Havant and Waterloo District Council designing and building a few of the new roads in the District; the road from the dual carriageway onto Hayling Island being one of them.

Ah so it's you that I have to blame for the two lanes going into one palava.* * I know it's not your fault, it's the idiots that race to get there first.
The small dual carriageway piece is there because of the large number of people that used to work at the IBM site. It reduced congestion at the morning and afternoon peak times. I don't know how many work there now but my assumption would be "not many". It was fun working on site. I used to get invited in for afternoon tea by the large houses on the right as you drive on to HI. It was, of course, to give them an update of progress and forewarning of any difficulties.

It's where I work now. Was IBM then Xyratex now Seagate. There is also Lockheed Martin on site aswell as a number of smaller businesses.

Uh, I think if her arms are around your neck that's good. Alternatively, if her *hands* are around your neck, that's bad.

Clearly they are referring to an ability to be REDUNDANT both verbally and clearly in their written communications!

As far as I know, IBM sold part of the drives business, possibly to Xyrates, and then moved the rest of the company elsewhere. I then worked for IBM at Warwick for 20 years before taking early retirement to go contracting.

Yes that's correct. I think it happened late Eighties early Nineties, it was a management buy-out. A hedge-fund then got it's claws in in 2013 and eventually sold to Seagate, making those original mangers millionaires whilst the rest of us dodge round and round of redundancies.
