The spectacled bear[^] (Tremarctos ornatus), also known as the Andean bear or Andean short-faced bear and locally as jukumari (Aymara), ukumari (Quechua) or ukuku, is the last remaining short-faced bear (subfamily Tremarctinae). Its closest relatives are the extinct Florida spectacled bear,[2] and the giant short-faced bears of the Middle Pleistocene to Late Pleistocene age.[3][4] Spectacled bears are the only surviving speciess of bear native to South America, and the only surviving member of the subfamily Tremarctinae. SO, THERE!

Ha! As soon as I started reading your post, I thought to myself, "Self, I'm pretty sure I've seen a spectacled bear at the Cincinnati Zoo", so I clicked on your wiki link to see what it looked like, and (after fixing it with '_bear') the picture in the description is captioned with "At the Cincinnati Zoo".

When you're around a grizzly, be sure to Treadwell. Too soon?

I had to Google him... so 2003 isn't too soon for me. And having read his story on wiki, I can only say "what an idiot"... Evolution in action!
