I thought it was going to be QUINS (5 people [characters], as well as being 5 letters [characters]), but now I can see the pattern in the symbols.

It's short for 'quintuplets', innit! Twins, triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets.
Oh I see, so 'QUINS' comes from 'Quintuples'. Thanks for waking my common sense up :)
