With a blast of X-rays compressing a capsule of hydrogen to conditions approaching those at the center of the Sun, scientists from Sandia National Laboratories reported today that they had achieved thermonuclear fusion, in essence detonating a tiny hydrogen bomb. Such controlled explosions would not be large enough to be dangerous and might offer an alternative way of generating electricity by harnessing fusion, the process that powers the Sun. I remember reading about the Z Machine a while ago: The Observer: A Machine called Z[^] ( December 31, 2000 ) - a good read, too. I can't figure out what has changed since the Dec 31, 2000 article was written. Maybe it's the first time they actually proved it was generating fusion. [Edit] It appears that what they discovered is that the machine actually does produce fusion (though, not necessarily self-sustaining fusion): When atoms are fused, thermonuclear neutrons are released as part of the atomic reaction. Last year, Sandia scientists first detected those neutrons coming out of the Z-machine, but they couldn't tell for sure where exactly they were coming from, said Keith Matzen, a Sandia program manager. "There are so many processes by which neutrons can be generated," Matzen said. "We wanted to be sure they were coming from the capsule and not from another part of the process. It doesn't have to be self-sustaining if the energy generated is greater than that put in to each pulse. You can fire off a continous stream of pellets/pulses and generate more energy. My frontal lobe is not big enough for this stuff, but I found the following scientist humour quotes hilarious. These guys should be stand up comics.
